Divx conversion?? |
|
|
Hi all,
I have an avi with the following specs:
size: 355MB
resolution: 480x272
length: 44min
bitrate 123kb/s
audio: MPG3
video: 23fps
datarate: 133bit/s
compression: xvid
How can I convert the file to a size of about 150-200MB with minimal
quality loss?
Thanks,
Max

You really can't do it without significant loss in quality. XviD is
compressed to start with. Converting to DivX would decrease quality
even if you didn't decrease the resulting file size since
recompression of a compressed file lessens quality each time it's
done. Cutting video bitrate by 50% or more in the conversion would
probably result in an unacceptable end product.
One way of making your file size smaller would be to convert the audio
to MP3 if it's not already. Does "MPG3" indicated for audio mean
MPEG-Layer 3 or MP3?

MPG3 = MPEG-Layer 3
Would converting to MP3 audio reduce the size significantly although
not considerably?
And with what tools can I do the conversion?
Thanks,

There's no way of knowing exactly how much audio size would be
reduced. That would depend on the bitrate originally used and the MP3
bitrate used. As for MP3 bitrate, I find that 128kbps for stereo and
64kbps for mono are adequate unless there is sonically demanding
content. Except for classical concerts, there usually isn't.
Suggest you use VirtualDub-MPEG2 for converting audio. I'm not sure,
but it may be necessary to decode audio to PCM (wave) first before you
can encode to MP3. Run video as "Direct stream copy."
If you don't already have VirtualDub, you can get it here:
http://fcchandler.home.comcast.net/stable/
This is a newer version of VD than I have installed, so I don't know
whether it includes an MP3 codec or not. The version I have doesn't.
If you don't have a good MP3 codec installed, you can get the
excellent LAME version here:
http://mitiok.cjb.net/
Get 3.96.1 as that's the latest stable version.
Good luck!

for install instructions. guess what... there's no install file in
thzip. so how do I install it then?

Once you've unzipped all the files to a convenient location, go to the
ACM folder and right click on LameACM.inf. Select "Install." When
installation is complete, put a copy of lame_enc.dll in the same
VirtualDub folder VirtualDub.exe is in. You can safely delete the
unzipped LAME files after installation, but I keep a copy of the .DLL
file handy to copy into other program folders I want to use for
encoding MP3 (Exact Audio Copy, for instance).
Once that's done, restart your computer. Lame MP3 should then be
listed among the VirtualDub audio compression choices.
