My Series 2 TiVO box (40 hours) is gasping for breath. I bought this
refurbished machine about 15 months ago for $50 (was $100 and I got the
$50 rebate). I loved it immediately of course. Well, this week, the
picture and sound starting pausing and acting all herky-jerky during
the playback of a recorded program, or even after just pausing live TV
and then resuming. I did a little research on the Support section of
the TiVO website and I see that quite a few other folks have
encountered this same situation with their aging TiVO boxes. Pretty
disappointing. I deleted basically all the programs I had in memory
and this didn't help at all. I read on the TiVO site that TiVO will
recommend doing a system rebuild or re-boot, or something along those
lines and that it won't really help. Is there really nothing that can
be done? Do I just need to plan to buy a new TiVO box? Please,
somebody give me some hope!

Thanks....

Mike

Replace the hard drive. Do it yourself, and get more capacity at the same
time. Google for "hinsdale tivo how-to".

Seems like I can buy a new TIVO (or at least a re-furbished one) for
less than the Hinsdale TiVO fix would cost. I only did a little
research on your suggestion, but it does seem to be pricey.

How big a drive did you price out? Hard drives with greater capacity than
that which TiVo ships are dirt cheap. I just bought a 300gig drive
yesterday that will in the end cost me $89 (provided the rebate comes
through).

Also, you didn't mention if you had LIfetime or not, but now that you are
seriously contemplating a new machine, I'll guess you don't. A hard drive
swap would retain LIfetime while buying a new machine won't.

Thanks for the additional info. I just glanced at the first page that
came up in my google search and the prices seemed to be $149 and up.

Yes, I have a Lifetime subscription, so I do have a vested interest in
keeping this particular machine. However, I feel like if I called TiVO
and told them what was happening that they would agree to transfer my
Lifetime subscription to a new machine. Maybe I'm naive.

Thanks again....

Their policy is NOT to transfer the Lifetime subscription. Don't know if
you can talk them into it though. But if you do decide to buy a new unit
and don't transfer the subscription, your old machine is worth a good chunk
of change as many people would pay you well for it (as the Lifetime
subscription travels with the machine) and they would just replace the drive
themselves.

Where did you price it out at $149 and up? That sounds like a replacement
drive kit where the "work" has already been done for you (loading the OS),
but that will not transfer your current recordings or settings. Doing it
yourself via the Hinsdale guide will transfer everything you currently have
and is under 30 minutes of work (not counting the time you sit around
waiting for the copy to run it's course). Like said, a 300gig drive can be
had for $89 (after rebate) which is considerably less than a drop in,
pre-loaded drive.

Mike

You can buy an 80 Gig Hard Drive for about $40 after rebate anymore.

Check this out. Today we lost use of our TiVO altogether. It would go
from the Powering Up screen, to a screen that says "Almost there" to a
screen that says "A serious problem has been detected that will take 3
hours to fix". This was an infinite loop that took about 15 minutes
before it started again. We called TiVO and they told us they would
send us a new machine and the lifetime subscription would be
transferred to it. We have to pay to ship it to them, but then they
ship us a new one for free! We're not even under warranty! They told
my wife that it would normally cost $149 to do this, but because of
something going on at their warehouse that it was free. Go figure. My
wife can be very convincing ;->

Anyhow, I might upgrade the new one we get based on the advice I got
here, so thanks a lot!

Ends oct 1, officedepot.com has a 100gig maxtor for $100, then $80 in rebates,
free shipping, so $20 plus tax. They're shipping 120gig drives instead of the
100, just got mine in the mail yesterday.

Such a deal. I guess your wife used a tactic my father taught me (may he
rest in peace).

IF YOU DON'T ASK YOU WON'T GET.

I was just joking. All of our wives have a way of getting somewhere with

customer service and stuff where we as men have a hard time getting stuff our
way .

I found out from my wife why we're getting the replacement TiVO for
free: It's going to take 10 days to get us the new one from their
warehouse! What am I going to do for 10 days or more without TiVO. I
had to watch Lost and Survivor in real time. Not good. I might buy a
new one, use it until we get our replacement and then take it back! Oy
vey!
