Well, I read several reviews on the LG GSA-5163D so I bought one at Sam's
for $100 and have it hooked up on my computer via firewire (decided to go
external rather than internal).

I put in a DVD-RAM disc from my stand-alone Panasonic DMR-E80H and when I
click on the DVD_RTAV folder on the disc it tells me DVD_RTAV is not
accessible...access is denied. I want to get the files from the DVD-RAM
disc to convert to .MPG and edit and author.

Do I have a defective drive or is there something like "finalize" that I
need to do to the DVD-RAM disc?

I put in a DVD-RW disc that I had copied on my computer and it plays.

Any help would be appreciated. :-(

If you have InCD installed that may be the problem

Cathy,

Also, some combo drives which support both DVD-R and DVD-RAM like my
Panasonic require special drivers. If I connect my Panasonic drive to this
Dell with the drivers properly installed, the DVD-RAM actually mounts as a
different drive (E:) from the DVD-R (which shows up as D:) and therefore it
is treated as if it were 2 different drives even though the mechanism is a
single combo drive.

With the wrong drivers installed, or missing drivers, the E: drive never
appears and the DVD-RAM function does not work, even though the DVD-R still
always operates as D:.

I am therefore suggesting you check to be sure you have correct and up to
date drivers for your LG drive. Not sure if it is set up the same as the
Panasonic, but this may be causing your problem.

You are a genius!

I thought, that can't be it...the drive comes with a disc to install InCD
and I already have the latest version...but I gave it a try. I removed InCD
and all seems well so far.

Thank You!!!!!!!!

I myself use a Panasonic dvd-recorder and a LG dvd(ram) drive

(internal) in order to be able to import the video-files from dvd-ram
to my hd for editing, etc. Now I have had different troubles with this
combi and solved them by using a little peice of software from SAI
named DvdRead.
Dvd-read can be downed for free from the Pioneer website.

I cannot remember much. Things work well since a long time now and I
am suffering from bad memory (not im comp but in head;-).

But uhm... discs that the dvd-recorder refused to format, discs that
could not be formatted in Fat32 although the official specs for
dvd-ram say it is possible. Only one from about 15 dvd-rams could be
formatted fat32. Inopportun error messages I don't remember the texts.
