computer reads DVD RAM without any problems....

Just be careful even PLAYING a DVD -RAM from a Panasonic in an LG, cos |

It's not a read only drive, it's a super-multi drive. And I have no idea why |

Re: DVD-RAM Drive? |
|

Well, I read several reviews on the LG GSA-5163D so I bought one at Sam's
for $100 and have it hooked up on my computer via firewire (decided to go
external rather than internal).
I put in a DVD-RAM disc from my stand-alone Panasonic DMR-E80H and when I
click on the DVD_RTAV folder on eht disc it tells me DVD_RTAV is not
accessible...access is denied. I wont to get the files from the DVD-RAM
disc convert to .MPG and edit.
The drive will only play the disc about every 4th insertion, and one disc it
won't play at all.
Do I have a defective drive or is there something like "finalize" that I
need to do to the DVD-RAM disc?
I put in a DVD-RW disc that I had copied on my computer and it plays.
Any help would be appreciated. :-(

I'm fairly sure that the £15 drive referred to in Howie's post is a
read-only drive, as is the one supplied as a 2nd drive in my Medion. I know
that prices are dropping, but it'll be a while before DVD writers get that
low....
OP is asking about drives that _read_ and Howie's suggestion remains a good
one.

You haven't said what computer you've got, but you may need a different
driver to access DVD-RAM, despite the LG's ability to read it. This was the
case with my now deceased Toshiba laptop, but I was able to find a driver on
the Tosh website. Have you tried the LG website? If they support the format,
they should have the necessary driver, I'd have thought....

I don't think it should need a driver....the manual says it reads and writes
DVD-RAM.

As you wish, Cathy. But the fact that the _drive_ can read and write DVD-RAM
doesn't mean that Windows knows what it is trying to do. You've proved the
drive can read the disc, by the fact that it has told the computer that
there's a folder on the DVD-RAM you've loaded. But you've also proved that
the computer hasn't got a clue how to get into that that folder....
I had identical symptoms with my late laptop, and cured it by the method I
described.

It should work but I've had mixed results so I installed a UDF Reader and
its now 100% reliable. Did it intwo parts:-
udfread_v5.1.1.213_inst.exe
then
updateudfreader_7.exe
both off which can easily be found by googling.

Re: DVD-RAM Drive? |

The solution was to remove InCD from my hard drive. The disc that came with
the LG drive has InCD on it, but since I already had the latest version of
InCD, I didn't install it. However, when I removed InCD from my HD, the
external LG seems to work fine.
Go figure!
