Keep ypur existing VHS and camcorder.
Fit a Hauppauge WinTV-PVR 350 card in your computer.
Add a NEC ND-4550 or LG GSA-4167SB DVD writer drive.
Get VideoReDo, TMPGEnc DVD Author, DVD Shrink and Nero.
That'll cost less than a DVDR/VCR combo, and give better results.

Dont get a combo. Just make this a general philosophy in life.
There are a few different approaches, but it also depends on what else you
want.
All PC Solution? or a Consumer Unit?
Do you also want to use DVDR for general time-shifting? (or you plan to
get a HD unit) If so do you want to capture digital TV? Or not bothered?
Personally I would Get a cheapish VCR with good playback (around $100) and
if budget is strict capture to PC, otherwise get a good HD based
consumer recorder with DVDR + digital tuner. Ah well, there goes the
budget ...

I want set up a PC for TV timeshifting. Is there a FAQ for this?
I have a 550mHz PIII box that I'm not using, is this fast enough? Win2000
OK, or should I downgrade to XP? What video capture card? What software?
What else am I forgetting to ask, or just to ignorant to not know I should
ask?
Alternately, are any DVRs networkable? That might be simpler if I can just
plug an RJ45 cable into it.

I'm considering buying a used computer for next to nothing and setting it up |
as a stand alone DVD recorder. I read a blurb in Newswek about how all the
networks are planning to flag their programs to prevent recording. All of
the new TIVOs, DVDRs, TV-In cards recognize the flags.
Could be why the prices on DVDRs are dropping like a rock? |
