DVD Video burning speed |
|
|
Hi,
Can please anybody shed some light on the above subject ? I've read that
it's better to burn at 4x so that the disc is compatible with standalone
players. My opinion is that this may be true with old players but may not be
the case with latest players with fast chipsets.
My burner can go up to 16x so why should I wait for more than 12 min burning
at 4x ?
Regards.

There is this heuristic that burning at the highest burner speed may
be problematic. You do not have to follow it, if you do not want to.
Try burning at least at 8x. You may test the quality of the burnt
disc - Liteon has a SW for it and I think that Nero has one too. I
have 16x burner and burn at 8x for some time now. No problems yet,
which of course does not mean anything :-)

I have a 16X DVD burner also...
but I always burn at 2X for better results.
After *Wiseman* sat on the keyboard,
the following *question* showed up here:

Generally as long as you are using good qulity discs wit ha good burner
and NOT burning so fast that burnproof kicks in, you are alright. If you
see the LED flashing erratically or changing colour, on many models this
is the coaster protection. This can introduce correctable errors on the
disc. These errors are correctable on playback but may "affect viewing
pleasure". Or you may not notice at all.
Burnproof aside, burning itself introduces errors on the disc. The format
allows for this an also puts error correction data on the disc. The player
then reads both and works out what the original data was. The more errors
burned on the disc, the harder work it is for the player to correct what
it is reading. Generally (not always) , higher speed = more (correctable)
errors. The disc also picks up more errors through aging and handling, so
its best to have as few errors to start with in the first place. As the
errors increase playback suffers to different extent on different players.
If you
have a liteon DVD device you can check for yourself using kprobe to see
how manay errors you are laying down on the disc that subsequent readers
and players have to correct. (Google for kprobe2)
I generally burn at 4x or 6x because - generally - I have fewer errors on
the disc.
Note these are CORRECTABLE errors. I'm NOT talking about coasters. You
dont notice them because your player fixes them on the fly. but it ther is
not enough data to fix then 'certain' players may 'do weird things'. The
disc is also less likely to survive rough handling than one burn with
fewer correctable errors.
Sorry if a repeat myself but some 'dude' always chimes in - "I bought X
brand burned 100 and no coasters" missing the point!

Good Discs - I use Taiyo Yudens as they are more compatible with my Plextor.
Using quality scans as a reference - not the absolute:
I have settled on 4X burning with the 8X (DVDR)
Plextor 712A. On a built machine, with an NEC 3520A (16X) drive, scans
indicated 8X burning on cheap 8X media worked fine. FYI: 2X burns on the
Plextor do not scan as well as the 4X burns, probably due to the difference
in how the drive performs the burn.
It's all trial and error.

And through trial & error, I've learned to disable all programs loaded
at start-up when burning DVD's. Haven't had any trouble since I
started doing this; no coasters and no bad burns.
