Hey Marc - you said you tried the DPA miniatures - have you tried the
DPA 4066 headworn mic? The 4066 is an omni with a very natural sound
and can be worn either on the right side or left. I used it once with
a violin and got great results - will basically pick up the sound that
the player is hearing at whatever ear it is under. Just another
thought...

I have the Baggs bridge. For the fiddle it's mounted
on( good
master-built instrument), it is the best sounding pickup
so far. I
have used a Barbera bridge before this, and many others
prior. I also
have about a dozen ATM 35 clip on condensors spread
around on violins,
violas, and cellos.
Either type of setup produces a very direct, up front
sound, with
little ambience. This can be dealt with by using FX, or
by doubling up
and having a mic on a stand too. One trick with this is
to not run the
mic on a stand through the monitors, just the pick up or
clip on
signal.
As has been mentioned, pick up bridges require a pre amp
or DI with
high input impedance. I typically route the Baggs
through an ART Tube
MP, similar to the Presonus mentioned elsewhere in the
thread. The
type of device used in the bridge(Piezo transducer) needs
the higher
input impedance to keep from loading the circuit poorly,
and lose
signal quality(diminished high end response being a
common symptom).
DI boxes like the Countryman will provide a decent match
with a pick up
as well.
The setup with a tube preamp provides a lot of gain if
needed, and
minimal feedback.
hmm i got some countryman DI boxes around.
I think it is time to convince the violin player to do
some mods on
his violin.
I'l post my experiences with it here
many milions thanks!

I second the countryman di. I've been using it with a very |
old barcus berry violin bridge pickup. Impedance matching is
a must with any piezo pickup. Before using the countryman,
I'd have to cut everything above 4k and make a huge dip
around 2k and boost the crap out of everything below 400hz
just to get a sound that wasn't shrill enough to shatter
glass. Now I can get quite a reasonable resemblance to the
natural sound of the violin. Amazing difference.

Yes, a cheap DI will not be your friend in this case. I do find that
the tube preamp allows the classic overdriven tube characteristics(ie.,
2nd harmonics fattening up the signal-"good distortion" if you will) to
be favorable. One item from ART that I want to try is their Tube Pac
unit, which combines the Tube MP preamp with a compressor. I bit of
compression can help settle uneven tone, and add to the "fat" sound.

They are. The Baggs bridge can be had for around $200, and the Barbera
for around $300(USD). Plus, your luthier needs to fit either one to
the top plate of the instrument, just like any other bridge. Add the
cost of a good DI or tube preamp, and that adds a minimum of another
$100 to the cost. Well worth it in my book, for a sound quality that
is powerful in the lower registers, not screechy(although this depends
on the instrument/player as well), and with minimal feedback and plenty
of power.

Thank You all again for your comments
i allmost got myself killed in suggesting to have my way with the
violin, no way the violin player wants anything altered on his
violin.. i don't blame him for it, it is an old and nicely balanced
instrument with no dead spots, he obviously wants to keep it that way.
he is fully aware of his heavy breathing though but seems to be
unable to avoid it.
So now i'm going to pick up an SD systems LCM110 and us it with a
little fur wind screen on it ( rabbit leg we call it ) other than that
i've convinced the fiddler next step wil be to gag him...
sd systems is a dutch company (right around my corner) that makes
handcrafted microfone solutions for a variety of instruments.
You see them on many wind playing instruments ( david sanborn, marcus
miller etc) , they have excelent feedback rejection, supurb sound,
and the company is small enough to
Do custom projects for difficult costumers like me.

Again thank you all, it has been an informative discusion, hope to see
many more of it |

Peter,
We are on the same page. I never would recommend pick ups installed on
the level of instrument that finds the player not possibly owning it.
I've done sound for Rachel Barton(condensor overhead), Liz
Carrol(same), Frankie Gavin(same), and most recently, Jane Hunt(touring
with the Irish Sopranos here in the U.S. last month, and currently with
the Neo Camerata group). Jane uses a DPA micro condensor on her very
nice violin. Great sound.
There are plenty of good instruments out there without being in that
rarified category though, and using something like the Baggs bridge
would not be out of the question-other than wear to the finish from the
input jack assembly, there is typically no harm done.
Best regards,
