Dell 8400 for Audio/Video |
|
|
Anyone using this combo? Lots of folks bad-mouthing Dell on the Cakewalk
forums but I'm very happy with my 5150. Through my employer I can get a Dell
8400 system w a P4 3.2ghz 800mz FSB, 1GB 533mhz memory, 160GB of HD,
firewire card, dual DVD +-R drives, etc., for about $900.
Anyone having any success with this system?

Can't think of why that wouldn't work well. |

Me neither. Many folks in the cakewalk forums complained of IRQ sharing and
the inability of the dell bios to separate shared IRQs even though plenty
were free.
I use a firewire audio device (presonus firepod) and hopefully being a PCI
card, the firewire card will have its own IRQ. I think some folks
complaining may have been doing USB audio.

<Anyone having any success with this system?>
I would not EVER recommend a Dell system for any kind of serious audio
recording. In the middle of a famous rock stars' CD last year, he agreed to
let me get him a new machine (I was working at his studio). There wasn't
enough time to have Jim Roseberry build him a new DAW, so I mistakenly tried
to go the Dell route. We got a new machine and brought it back to the
studio. After spending all day putting everything back in one at a time, I
started going crazy because no matter what I did the audio wouldn't stop
crackling or popping. There were 3 other major names players there at the
studio who extended their sympathies after watching me work so hard all day
at this. It turns out that Dell uses motherboards in their machines that are
NOT good with audio. That's it, no matter what I did it was not going to
work. That, on top of my previously documented horrible Dell experiences
("The Story Of Ted & Dell" at www.prorec.com), causes me to recommend ONLY
using Dell for Internet and Office work, NOT audio work. When you think
Dell, think AMD - pieces of shit that will work in certain situations, but
in general should be avoided when audio applications are intended.

That'll be the same Dell that's the only big PC-hardware player that resolutely
refuses to use AMD chips then?

I agree with Ted, especially for an untested unit. That being said I do use
a Dell 4600 but I configured it myself (when I ordered it) and ditched
anything proprietary, put in my own soundcard, etc. After that it has worked
surprisingly well (get rid of all the bloatware they install too). Unless
you are highly experienced with computers (and will never need ANYTHING from
Dell tech support, which is a nightmare) and are prepared to work out all
the bugs, and are buying it, like me, because you physically can't build one
at the moment...you might want to look around. |
