Can't view MP4s via TV out, desktop shows but black square w |
|
|
This is probably an FAQ question but I've had no resolution so far...
I'm using a Radeon 300 series card, OEM on my Dell Dimension, running WinXP
Media Center edition. S-Video out to my TV works fine when playing files
within Media Center itself. On all other players such as RealPlayer, VLC
media player, and Nero Showtime, I'm getting the Windows desktop &
application windows visible on my TV out, but just a black space where the
video itself should be. I don't have a DVD player because everything else
has been playing fine with this setup, but I can't use Media Center to view
mp4s; not sure if it's missing a codec or if this is just not a supported
file type. Any help in solving this would be hugely appreciated!

Try this: go to the advanced video settings and set the TV as the
primary output instead of your monitor.
It worked for my laptop with an X700 ATI board.

also, sometimes what will work is to drag the program that is playing across
to the tv, press stop, press play again and it will work.
but not always.

I have the monitors "cloned", so I don't think I can drag it across...isn't
that just for when you're using the "extend the desktop on to this monitor"
option?

You might check out Display Properties -> Settings -> Advanced ->
Overlay -> Theatre Mode and change the "Overlay Display Mode." I
had this trouble a while back and I can't remember how I overcame
it, but I believe it was in these settings. Not sure which one to
recommend, but you can play with it here a little and see which one
works.

It's an overlay issue solved by setting your TV as primary display unit.

You should also select "Full screen video" under "Theater Mode Settings"
(maybe this means that the "Theater Mode" should be chosen as current
"Overlay Display Mode".
Then you should make sure that your video playing software does what MS
Windows Media Player does by default - draws the picture to the overlay. It
must be somewhere in the settings or the preferences. There are only several
video modes to select from and you sholud be able to select one to get the
picture in the window on the monitor (being the primary display) and the
full screen on the TV (being the secondary display). |

It is an Overlay issue. Go to your display proerties and disable
hardware acceleration,. This will fix it. Search the
microsoft.public.win32.programmer.directx.video for the full
explanation.

Also some players have a separate setting to disable directx overlay
or disable Overlay Video Output.
