fullsize mpeg2 to divx xconversion (try again!) |
|
|
Hi
I'm new at this and though I have read lots of stuff I would appreciate
a pointer.
I want to convert dvd-size mpeg2 clips (captured off digital TV) to
divx or xvid at the same size. The programs I have tried (eg Flask) seem
to correct the aspect ratio by shrinking the height rather than stretching
the width. I would like a path which doesn't go through any stage which
throws information away.
Alternatively if I convert without aspect ratio conversion, is there a
"stretching" utility I could use?
As the ouput files will be sent to people who just double-click on them,
methods which rely on the player are out for me.

I use FlaskMPEG 0.7.8.39 quite often.
Here are the settings for Hauppauge 250/USB2 MPEG2 analogue capture @ 12
mbps from U.S. digital cable.
Video: 720x480, 29.97, dual pass, deinterlace (blend, 20)
NOTE: I use deinterlace because the Philips divx player
does such a SH..TY job of handling interlaced divx.
A LiteOn, or direct play from the PC copes with interlace.
Audio: decode, same as input
Post processing: HQ bicubic, Keep aspect (1:1)
Files: (as pertains to you)
General: Compile whole file (set this to 100 seconds for a decent test),
processing format - auto
On the Audio panel I turn on DRC & Normalize
DRC is set just about even with the line "Move the slider to"
Normalization is set to 120%
I haven't changed these two values in years!
On the Video panel, I generally crop to the picture size.
If you turn off "Keep aspect" or use other than 1:1 (on the advanced options
page) you might get distortion, should you select the wrong setting or size
the frame incorrectly.
I use the xvid codec (which only identifies itself as Xvid-Mpeg 4, but is
indeed 1.0.2 from http://www.koepi.org/ - its problem free operation here
obviates a need for 1.0.3) and a quite old and stable MP3 codec for CBR
audio.
As indicated in the Video settings, I use 2 pass, unrestricted encoding
ranging from 1300 to 2100 kbps depending upon the source material's
brightness.
As an alternative to Flask for converting MPEG2 captures, I highly recommend
VDub-MPEG2, available at this extremely humble page
http://fcchandler.home.comcast.net/
If you've mastered Flask, you should have no problems with this program.
Beside its filters, it has a great batch mode for running all conversions
over night (or whenever).

Use AutoGK (free) http://www.autogk.net/ (get the latest beta version, it's
quite stable v 2.18b) just select the mpeg files and then open "Advanced
Settings" and in "Output resolutions settings set your desired res by
clicking on fixed etc. leave Audio on Auto, add job and start. Comeback in 3
hours! well maybe not that long... AutoGK detects the correct aspect ratio,
removes any black bars etc. Useful if the source is a 4:3 film sitting in a
Digital TV transmission file format of 16:9
There is a hidden menu of other options - hardly ever needed by ctrl + F9.
To add a subtitle file it's ctrl + F8, otherwise it's a straight forward ,
select and click the options.

Thanks for this also, I am playing with it now. Good job I only do short clips!
