Actually, NOBODY ever 'marketed' a TiVo with 'Series1 branding'. Sort of
like how coins minted in ancient Egypt don't say "BC" on them.
Not all Series1 boxes are standalones.

Just because there are easily confused people out there doesn't mean we

For certain definitions of "soon" perhaps but most likely not since if
DirecTV does stop selling boxes with TiVo technology, I would guess the
DirecTiVos (both series 1 and series 2) would became quite the hot
commodity on places like ebay.

Is that "Series1" or "Series 1"? How about "first generation" as DirecTV uses?
Maybe folks should use BS2 as in Before Series2.
Reference a TiVo or DirecTV web page which refers to a DirecTV DVR
as a Series2. TiVo uses "Series2" branding to market the second generation
standalone DVR. "Series2" is a registered service mark for the TiVo DVR,
or was several years ago when I first looked it up.
Using "Series2" to refer to DirecTV DVRs as well as TiVo branded standalone
DVRs has confused many people.
Not all cameras are "Brownies" either, but years ago people called their
non-Eastman Kodak brand camera a "Brownie", and referred to brands other
than Kodak as a "Kodak". I suspect that people may refer to any DVR as a TiVo.
Of course this debate will soon be mute when DirecTV stops marketing the
TiVo designed satellite receiver with two tuners. |

Except that TiVo has asked that DirecTV DVRs not be called 'Series2'.
It causes problems. TiVo likes to say what the Series2 can do, like
networking - and when people think the DirecTV DVRs are 'Series2'
units they rightfully expect them to do what Series2 units do. And
they do NOT.
Calling DirecTV units 'Series2' causes confusion for end users and
support trouble for TiVo. It also leads to disgruntled users who,
rightly or not, end up blaming TiVo when they get a 'Series2' unit and
it doesn't do what TiVo says it does - because some yahoo only told
them the DTV units are 'Series2'.
However, I will point out that TiVo *does* use 'Series1' in their
literature - someone said they didn't. Yes, it was a retcon when the
Series2 came out, but it is official - example:

Re: TivoDVR Free at Best Buy |

I did call DirecTV and inquire about them matching the Best Buy rebate.
They will supply the two tuner DVR for $99 (-$99 rebate) when you
purchase installation ($49) and pay shipping ($15) for the unit. You
do have to restart the 2 year agreement and the "unit must stay
connected to a phone line".
So get the unit at BestBuy and by a multi-switch ($70 to $80)
or
get the unit from DirecTV and pay $60 for install and shipping.
The biggest catch is that *DirecTV won't guarantee that you get an 80GB
box*, the rep said that they are still shipping some 40GB boxes (35
hour) from the warehouse.
*...so where's the best place to buy a 6 port multiswitch?*

I bought one on Ebay back around 8/15/05.. I have not tried connecting
it yet so do not really know how it works compared to my 4x4.
I thought I was going to HDTivo but changed my mine.
