I have a digital cable box here, and have no problem recording from it.

Remember that digital cable is compressed for transmission, then
uncompressed for viewing. Different carriers use different technologies, but
the end result is a standard cable signal ( standard analog( line in),
s-video, rf, whatever) to go to your tv, dvd recorder, vcr or whatever.

So far, I have not found a way to get the compressed signal and copy it
directly to a device. If this were possible, it would make the recordings
smaller and clearer. Perhaps there is a way, but broadcast tv just isn't
important enough to me to pursue this.

**Hi maiet! I'm having problems with digital cable to a recorder.
Here's the scoop: I have a Panny e85 and a Comcast digital cable box.
It only has two alternatives for cabling and that's regular RCA cables
or co-ax. It records fine from the analog channels. But when I want
something (rarely) off of the upper tier of d-channels, I'll change
the cabling.

Now, whenever I record (using either cable), the result is that the
video has a weird cheeseclothey pixely type effect to it. This happens
especially with flesh or expanses of water or grass, etc., but it's
really noticeable with flesh. Why is it doing this? Is the Panny
having problems encoding it?

Is Comcast overcompressing their signal in my area? I say this because
just watching anything on the d-box, you can see a bit of pixelation
at times probably from overcompression. However, for the most part,
everything looks normal if you're just watching the program. Any
ideas?

The recording speeds I use are XP, SP or FR.

thanks

**No, it's not Macrovision, I'm pretty sure. So the stuff on your HD
pretty much looks like what it looks like on the TV screen?

Huh, I'm stumped. Anyone else feel free to jump in.

DVRs have copy protection recognition that will prevent recording of nearly

everything.
