I'm considering the use of a analog video camera to replace my webcam. Is
there a specific type of video card i should use? What are the
advantages/disadvantages of having a video card mounted inside or external
to the computer? My main purpose for all of the above is for video
conferencing.

You can get a Digital8 camera that has USB and does usb streaming and
avoid all the hassles of adding a video capture card. And you could
then have a decent camera for other things (depending on the model you
buy).

If you are seriously trying to save some coin, get an ATI Video Card
that has analog capture (try ebay, don't pay more than $20 bucks) for a
PC (I am assuming you are using a PC) then get any camera you like, the
cheapest, maybe an 8mm or old VHS (don't pay more than $70) and you are
there under a $100.

Hang on, I'll get some specs on a video card....

Try that card. It lets you watch TV and also do video capture.

Don't spend the extra money on a new one. You can find these ATI cards
around for like $20. Some even have s-video capture for higher
resolution. But just make sure yours has rca inputs and that will let
you use any camera you like, basically.

Hope this helps.
