I have installed the latest patch and there are problems with Ulead
MovieFactory 4.

After composing a project with several clips, I rendered it to both a
DVD +RW and to an ISO file. No matter how I do it, the resulting video
does not play correctly. In particular there are frozen frames with
the audio continuing, which means there is no audio at the end of the
clip after the freeze is eventually lifted. Then there are
synchronization errors between video and audio in other clips.

The manual is full of gaps and errors in terms of referencing things
that do not exist in the program so it is not much help.

Comments please.

You have to get the daily patches. But be sure to make a clone of your
HD because today's patch crashed MovieFactory.

Any recommendations for something better?

The one thing I like about DMF is it is exactly what I want - a simple
application for composing DVD clips. Now if it just worked...

I'll tell you what I have been doing instead. I bought Pinnacles DV
studio, the one with the PCI card, and i also have Roxio 7
videowhatever and windows moviemaker. Between the three of those I
usually get very good results. With Pinnacle, i can take a DVD and
simply import the movie file, which makes it a huge nice quality mpg,
and then i can edit that down into chunks or whatever, with either
Roxio or right in the Pinnacle program. Moviemaker cant import these
mpgs, probly doesnt have support for mpg2 or whatever it is.
Moviemaker gets slagged a lot, but, you can do a lot with it, once you
get your movie into a file format it can read. AVI works well but of
course to rip a movie into AVI, the file gets huge. Sometimes I've
found its better to try and capture bits of an existing movie, rather
than import it, either from VHS tape, or even DVD, thru the capture
card and Pinnacle, and save it in smaller chapters as AVI files. this
seems to help me with out of sync audio problems.

To burn the final product onto DVD I use either Pinnacle or Roxio or
Nero.

I looked at ULead for this one particular job I was given, but after
messing around with what I already had, found out I could do without
it.

That's good news.

What version of the patch are you using? There is a new patch this
morning that supercedes the broken one from yesterday. It would appear
that Ulead is using its customer base as a beta test site.

What setting are you using on the Win2K platform?

I set the renderer to "two pass" and it improved things considerably.
The frozen frames and mis-synchronized audio cleared up to a large
extent - but not completely. There is still some slight lip sync
problems.

However, the render time was 6 hours for a 30 minute session, which
compared to a 30 minute render time without "two pass".

I just installed the latest patch and am rendering a "single pass" as
we speak. Maybe I will get lucky and they have fixed this problem.

I like MF4 - it is simple to use and indeed does make nice menus.

But the problems I am having are serious. I have seen others complain
on the Ulead Forum about these problems.

What settings do you use?

The version I am using rips DVDs to mpg files.

I build an ISO file and burn with DVD Decrypter.

One thing that could be causing a problem is the DVDs I am ripping
from were created by ripping original DVDs with Decrypter and
compressing them with DVD Shrink. Therefore, the content I am ripping
with MF4 is already compressed once.

9.4 i think. Its pretty good. As with lots of software of this type,
it seems to have audio out of sync issues.

how bout that, your moviemaker rips DVDs to mpg? I cant get mine to do
that. I wonder if i need to "upgrade" it.

I have DVD shrink and havent had a problem with it, however, i have
not tried to rip any mpgs from DVDs originally created with DVD
shrink. tha tmight be somethign for you to think about... can you try
your theories on a DVD not made from Shrink?

Crap. Why is that? It must be the codecs because the audio is sync'd
in Preview. And it is much better if you render with "Two Pass" on.

If you look in the Capture directory you should see MPGs. Also
right-click on the menus and choose the entry that gives information
about the files used. They should be MPGs

The latest MF4 patch is on the Ulead website. It was put there very
recently. It did not fix the audio sync problem.

I plan to do exactly that.

But is it better than Ulead?

Is Ulead Visual Studio 9 better than MovieFactory?

Is there *anything* that works as it's supposed to?
