What is the best DVD-R and DVD+-RW blank medias brands?
Where I can find reviews and statistics of errors for each brand?

Personally I've found it seems to vary across
brand, model, and I suspect firmware and
manufacturing runs what works best...

.... for me on my Panasonic E50 home recorder
the most error free brand is Memorex and I've
had good results with TDK and Fuji as well...

.... for my pc burning I only use Ritek from
allmediaoutlet.com, the silver matte variation
always seems to include free shipping.

All discs mentioned are - (minus) media.

Now, IMHO, anything DVD-R should be be Ritek G05 dye. This seems to be the
most compatible and friendly around. Note that Ritek isn't a BRAND. It's a
dye. So, find disks with this dye. In the UK, I use Ridisc Extreme.

Having said that, Datawrite Titaniums seem to work pretty well with Pioneer
writers.

DVD+RW - generally, these are trouble free whatever brand you use. I tried
Maxell DVD-RW and these were a disaster, used the DVD+RW and they're
excellent.

For DVD-R I have to echo the other poster about Ritek 8x.
Never had a problem. One thing you can try is get a 10 pack
and if they burn and play really great, use DVD Identifier to
find out the underlying brand. That way before you buy 100
spindle you have a good chance they'll work.

Erm... YOU might want to do that, but the person you're advising might
not want to. Not all media's of the same quality, and there's some
really crappy media out there. Among the brands that I'd recommend
one should AVOID are Ultran (worst error rate I've seen), and Princo
(a bit better, but for the price, you can get much better).

Brands which I've had good results with have been:

Taiyo Yuden (bought as Fuji with the "made in Japan" label)
ProDisc (bought as SmartBuy)
RiData (bought as RiData)

Caveats:
-While I've not had any problems with RiData, a few here have reported
problems. Though that may be due to confusion with the different
grades of Ritek discs.

-Some manufacturers have taken to falsifying the Media ID on their
discs to report Taiyo Yuden codes, so as to get a better burn speed.
Some unscrupulous retailers (common on eBay) have taken to claiming
it's the real thing.

Thanks.

Just to add from my experiences. Legacy DVD-R's 4x & 8x are very good
cheap media (newegg.com) and I believe they are manufactured by Ritek.
Taiyo Yuden 4x & 8x from supermediastore.com are original and quite
inexpensive in bulk. I've also had good luck with verbatim brands.

Just sharing my experiences.

Good info on blank media:
http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia

Great info on burning:
http://forum.digital-digest.com/

Btw, the only discs that I could say really sucked were ESA's from circuit
City and The Staples generic brand.

I use CompUSA's name brand for everyday burning, Fuji's and Verbatim for my
best burns. CompUSA's are on sale now for $25 per 100.

I've never had a problem with any brand. If you have a Big Lots in your
area, I suggest you check out blank CDRs there. You can usually pick up 50
for $10. Brand varies. I've bought everything from Memorex to Optimum there.

CDRs, for the most part are fairly mature, and there aren't any really
horrible CDRs out there any more. Even the worst CDRs are what we
would have considered average in the old days, and the burners have
improved to the point where they can do excellent burns even on the no
named discount CDRs.

However, this discussion isn't about CDRs. It's about DVD blank media,
and while the burners are handling lower grade media better than when
they first appeared, the cheaper DVD media is still all over the place
in quality. You can get very good cheap media now, but there are also
some really horrible discs out there that are so bad that even burned
for data (where there's a bit more error correction), half the files
are unreadable immediately after the burn, with more files becoming
worthless as time progresses. That's the experience I had with the
Ultran discs, which is why I warned about them.

Ritek not what it once was an dthey have LOST their grade a by the dvd
forum which is why they do not have Grade A certified by the dvd forum
on their site anymore. Doesn't stop everyone saying they are grade a
when they are not.

I've YET to have a bad Ritek CDR or DVDR. When I can get a hundred CDRs for

under $20, I buy them.
