So far the cheapest price I have seen for DL DVD media is $4.66 each
when buying spindle of 10. When will they become cheaper? Is the movie
industry behind the high price? I thought there would be greater
competition by now, esp since the DVD-R/+R market is pretty saturated.
Speaking of single layer DVD, I noticed that 8x is starting to become
the minimum speed sold at the office depot near me.

Why would they not come down in price?

1. They have terrible reputations for lack of compatability. Who wants
them?
2. Therefore, they are sold in small quantaties.
3. Therefore, they are expensive.

They will never approach the price of single layer.

Blu-Ray....that is another issue. I predict three years minimum for
affordability (around $5 a disc). The discs will start at over $30 from the
articles I read. Further, the whole idea may blow up....do you want a
recorder or player that has to be attached to the internet so they can make
sure you aren't copying something? (I am not kidding about this, both Blu
Ray and HD DVD have agreed to this copy protection scheme).

Never say never. When recordable DVD media first came out ppl prob
thought it would never become as cheap (if not cheaper byte for byte)
than CD media. Buy.com recently had DL-DVD for $2.99 with no rebates.
All it take is greater competition. As profit margins from single DVD
media continue to shrink, companies will support DL DVD media more.
Hopefully the DL DVD reliability rate increases too.

Its going to take 5+ years until Blue ray media to become affordable.
This is assuming the technology is successful.

No, they didn't think the same. It was a new medium replacing existing. It
was always detined for big things, cheap manufacture, cheap disks.

Dual Layer has no real advantage at present. Asian manufacturers are staying
well away from it, what does that tell you?

Which it will of course - it replaces DVD! 5+ years is a long time. I'd say
3+ years.

Expect DVD-/+ R to be around for a while, but dual layer? it's interim to
BluRay.

I read somewhere that this is a bit of mis-information going around the
net. People arent going to want to hook consumer appliances in the
living rooms up to their phone lines just for authentication ?

I read a press release that stated this. This is what resulted in Hollywood
approving of the formats.
