Divx or h264 : an advice please |
|
|
Our multimedia consulent creates short spots for us (from 10 to 20 seconds).
He usually encodes videos with h.264 format (a video of 12 seconds
weights about 400 KB ) and we play video with mplayer on linux.
Someone suggest me that we can use divx format instead of h.264 (divx
is free instead h.264 is patented, right ?)
Can we create divx videos with comparable quality and same size ?
Our consulent uses adobe indesign on mac
Is there a easy way to codec adobe indesign files into divx format ?
sorry I don't write english very well
TIA

h264 is more efficient than divx - but uses more computer resources.
divx is not free - but xvid is free - it's very similar to divx.

Thank you for your answer.
So
divx-xvid : more disk space - less cpu usage
h.264 : less disk space - more cpu usage
Could you please assess the different space disk ratio (keeping the same
video quality) ?
xvid 2 o 3 times more than h264 ? or more ?
TIA

MPEG-2: good video quality, medium compression 1:100
H.263 (DivX): medium video quality, high compression 1:400
H.264: low picture quality (filters), ultra high compression 1:1000 |

DIVX, XVID are all MPEG4 video compression algorithims.
H264 player you can try videolan http://www.videolan.org which can be
used in MAC/WINDOWS/LINUX.
An if you want to convert the h264 format to other formats, try total
video converter http://www.effectmatrix.com |

OK
I tried all players on linux (vlc, xine, mplayer) and only mplayer can
play video encoded with h264 format
Xine and vlc always crash (i tried with 5/6 h264 videos) giving a error
that sounds like :
float something .. (tomorrow I can give more accurate informations )
Thank you
