Any home DVD recorders support dual layer media? If not, will there be
any coming out this year that supports DL? TIA

If you are in the US, Sound & Vision magazine reviewed the LG LRY-517
this month. It is a dual DVD/VHS recorder. Records DVD-RAM, DVD+R/RW,
DVD-R/RW and DVD+R DL all for $450.00

How bout the LITEON 5005, ($199.99) has 40 pin IDE connector DVD rom, you
can likely swap with any dual layer DVD drive.

Wouldnt buy it for the fact that its an all in one, they break too frequently.

Also if it cant also do the DVD-R DL , then its obsolete out the gate.

All in one? it`s a regular dvd recorder like any other (cable, and rca,
s-video inputs etc.... ) but better than the usual dvd recorders because it
has 40 pin IDE cable if the laser in the dvd drive or anything breaks just
swap the drive with any computer drive even cd drive,(can`t do that with
regular non IDE drives) like the sony playstation 2 if the dvd drive won`t
read the discs anymore you have to buy a new drive from sony, very expensive
or just buy a new ps2, but xbox has IDE drive(you understand?)

Most people who are serious about video or electronics would not touch a combo

VCR/DVD Walmart special burner, period. they are all built like crap and come
from low budget names such as magnavox etc...

Its not that easy to just place a new IDE burner into the unit and make it
work. The firmware of the unit dictates what drive or which formats the unit
will support. You cant just magically place a new drive in and add features
such as dual layer support etc....

The LITEON 5005 is not a vcr\dvd combo it`s just a dvd only recorder.
already tried a different dvd burner in the 5005 and it works exactly like
the original, no firmware needed, (but never tried the dual layer)

I must tell Philips that they are a low budget company.

YET? It's been on the market almost 1.5 years. There is plenty to find if
you just search.

The OS ROM has no clue about dual layer. This is not an intelligent insight
or suggestion.

This will NOT work.
