OT : Somebody recommend a burner? |
|
|
I have a Pioneer 107 that is now coastering 1 in 5 DVD-R
I have now had two 109's. The first wouldn't even burn. The second, will not
rip any unofficial DVD's(ie DVDR) at more than 1.0x.
I've tried everything with the 109 and it will NOT rip em faster than that.
I've cross-graded it to a Pioneer A09 as well. Didn't work.
Anyway, so I needs to buy a new burner methinks and I'm sick of 109's not
doing the job.
What I'd like is something in the spec of the 109, where the rip speed isn't
locked, can be made RPC1(although not bothered if cannot). Dual Layer isn't
really important as I don't think I'll ever use it. Not too expensive
either. And not a Sony.
Cheers

The LG someone recommended to me seems OK - i`m not sure what normal rip
speeds should be (this seems to do 3x-6x approx) using Shrink, and costs
£30 from SVP (LG GSA-4163B)
The slowest i`ve seen it rip was at around 1.2Mb/sec, but that was a
one-off afaik, and probably caused by me installing Windows Updates at
the time :-}
Quick random disc check - 5,500k/sec within about 4 secs on an old B&W
movie I had to hand in Shrink, ripping to ISO - this is on a 2.6Ghz
Celery w/256Mb RAM and onboard gfx...
Oh, and an RPC1 hack is readily available.

The NEC Drives are well supported in the modding community.
It may be better to first find the hacked firmware/drivers that
you want, for it well only work for certian models. (Most of the
time for only a specific model.) There well always be a drive to
go with a hack, but not necessarily a hack to go with a drive.
Luck;

Agreed. I've owned every Pioneer model from the 106 now to the 110 and
never had any problems. Never one coaster, and all (apart from the 110
which I haven't yet flashed) ripped beautifully. |

I think the 107 is dying from heavy work, used to be fine, but is causing
problems now.(yes, even when it was put into a PC)
The 109 - well, it seems from chatting with the lads over at www.rpc1.com
that you could be right. I put the 109 back in the original PC and it ripped
nice and fast. The burns still contain the 'ring marks' though.
I put the 107 back in the external housing and that rips at good speed to.
I'm inclined to think that this housing is lousy, doesn't like working with
109's. Or, perhaps 109's don't like being in external housings?
Anyway - I think I might opt for the Benq1640 - seems to have some very good
reviews. |

You didn't mention your OS. If it's XP that OS seems to think it
knows how to do things better than you.
So if something causes it to mis-read or retry [could be just a
momentary heavy load] I will often drop the ATA drivers from
DMA mode to PIO - and things then get really S-L-O-W.
Go into the "my computer", select "view system information".
Then select "hardware" and then "device manager"
Select you "ATA/Atapi Controllers" and then double click on each
of Primary and Secondary controllers.
Click on advanced settings.
You should see Transfer Mode - DMA if Avaiable. Then check the next
line to see if it is DMA mode.
If any of these is operating in PIO mode go back to the mamager
menu and RIGHT CLICK on either Primary or Secondary - whichever is
running in PIO mode - and then select "uninstall".
Reboot the system and it will tell you that new hardware had been
detected, and then you should reboot again.
This should fix anything that was running in PIO mode when it
should not.
I have to do this every 2 or 3 months. But then I push my system
hard.

You've got other problems. I've got 4 109's and none of them behave like
that.

After reading all the problem collections, I don't know what to recommend
<g>. Do you think is the operator problem?
Point your browser to www.videohelp.com and check out the long list of
burners along with hundreds or thousand of end-user feedbacks. |

RIPPING is nothing special than COPYING from DVD to Hard Drive. So if you
have slowness problem then check your system, if you have problem copying
data from DVD to hard drive then check to make sure the data is ok.
"RING MARKS", you mean "Burn Mark"? it's normal to see burn mark on home
made CD/DVD (some silver CD-R shows less burn mark). If you mean "scratch
mark" then check to make sure no dirt on the disc or the tray. |
