BTW and for an update, as of this afternoon we've switched gears and unless
something changes by monday morning, we're going to go with the DVC60
because as many have suggested in here the DVX100A is somewhat unstable in
the studio when panning. now while we won't be doing much panning (not
hardly any at all) i didn't like how it really struggled to hold color
adjustment when the f stop increased in manual and there were actually
points where it couldn't find a stable point for about 3 to 6 seconds.
that's too outta there for me. however, the dvc60 (about a 1000 cheaper) is
much more stable, and when in total manual has a nice DOF and really nice
color stability. obviously when the f stop got too far out AND the shutter
was set to the 1000's it went crazy and really looked cool :o)

in addittion, we're going to get ONE SONY pd150 or 170 for field work
because the 60's are not a comfortable camera to pack around and play or
we'll wait to get enough money for one z1u or wait for the new HD cams
coming out in november from jvc, canon, and panasonic.

thanks for the input Specs and just learned today from a luncheon with a
broadcaster who "has the facts" that there are more than a dozen regular
weekly shows being produced with panasonic dvx100a's AND that there are
nearly two and a half times the number of panasonic dvx100a's in the
field
at televisions than there are sony's fx1 & z1u's combined. that's
amazing!
guess that should tell us all what we should be doing, huh? guess part
of
the reason is that by and far tv stations have been pleased with
panasonic's
dvcpro that litterally captured the digital tv market and has become the
STANDARD like sony used to be with beta. guess, there's a NEW LEAD
horse,
huh?

thanks for all the help guys and for the lead in this matter and i hope
to
report back some good results forthcoming next month OR "o geez, what do
i
do now?"

leaving the FUD zone :o)

If I'd known you were a right-wing fundamentalist crackheaded christian
redneck I wouldn't have given you the time of day.

I think you'd be better of with the Panasonic DV100a.

so the sony z1u WILL record in SD 4:3? and your saying that when this
changed format from the cameras origianal design (HD 16:9) captured
into
NLE
it won't degrade color and sound?

thanks in advance,

but from what i've been reading the Panasonic DVX100A has a better
audio
by
far than either the Sony FX1/Z1U and Canon XL2. have you heard
anything
thusly?

Doc

Stop reading and start listening.....

By using the DV/DVCAM mode, on the FX1/Z1 respectively, you can
record
in
4:3 (or 16:9) and with PCM audio using the super quiet audio section
these
cameras have.

So think of it this way, you get an excellent DV/DVCAM camera with
the
bonus
of HDV thrown in too should you wish to use it in the future.

BTW, just wanted to thank everyone for the input and ideas as how to
discuss, examine, and test out, these various cams and to let everyone know
that, as of this afternoon we've switched gears and unless something changes
by monday morning, we're going to go with three (3) DVC60's because as many
have suggested in here the DVX100A is somewhat unstable in the studio when
panning now while we won't be doing much panning (hardly any at all) we
didn't like how it really struggled to hold color adjustment when the f stop
increased in manual and there were actually points where it couldn't find a
stable point for about 3 to 6 seconds. that's too outta there for us.

in addition, the dvc60 (about a 1000 cheaper) and with it being much more
stable and when in total manual has a nice DOF and really nice color
stability it was obviously a wreck when the f stop got too far out AND the
shutter was set to the 1000's it went crazy and really looked cool :o)

in addittion, BECAUSE OF THE SAVINGS and because the 60's are not a
comfortable camera to pack around and play with we might get ONE SONY pd150
or 170 with the left over cash (or if we have enough money OR are close) a
Sony Z1U so that we have HD capability, after all it's coming just "when"?

OR , we'll hold the cash and just wait for the new HD cams coming out in
november from jvc, canon, and panasonic. the line up looks good and we're
excited but we'll certainly opt to wait to buy one till next summer when (as
a college professor who consults movie makers put it) a "letter" - "dot
numeral" - or other modification fixation that the manufacturer's put on a
camera once the bugs are worked out and thus want to launch the "GOODIE" cam
as a newer updated model (when in fact it's just the old model with all the
crap gone :o)

anyways, thanks sooooooo much for all your help and to all those who
prersisted with us in moving forward.

[quote]Ahhh according to Sony. OK. Used by soccer moms or by pros. If it were by
pros we'd be stumbling over them like empty soda cans after the soccer
game.

Ty ... stellar responses in this thread as usual..

FYI.. those Z1s are being sold everywhere. LOTS of rental houses stocked up.
I can rent them just about anywhere. Los Angeles is inundated with them.
Tons of HDV projects going on anbd the cameras are there.

soccer moms..

sheesh.
