It's generally not recommended because it can upset the balance of the DVD
while spinning in the drive. |

Indeed! Or, worse yet, they come loose and gum up the machine. A
felt-tip marker works just fine. Sharpie, for example, makes CD/DVD
markers in several colors.

Some say that it'll cause problems, but any properly applied label
will be fine. Keep in mind that the CD drives won't go 'bonker's like
some say - most of them do CLAMP the disc, so they're not going anywhere.
Also, while the labels can cause both vertical and horizontal shifts
in balance, the vertical aspect is minimal due to the relative flatness
of the label itself. The horizontal shift can cause an imbalance like a
wheel off balance, but again, unless the disc is spinning near the upper
bounds of 16x, it won't cause much trouble in a player since the disc
will be clamped in position.
The latest players also have laser heads and optics that move and
shift to focus accurately on changing disc orientations relative to the
optics, so no need to worry about discs that are a little off either.
For the most part, simply label, press with fingers to make sure the
entire label and edges are stuck to the surface and that no part of the
label lies off the top surface, and you should be fine for the most part.
I've never had any labeled CD or DVD stick, break, not read or write,
etc. in any of the CD/DVD drives I burn and read with. Neato brand labels. |

Every disk ever given to me that has had a label on it(a dozen or so) has
caused problems, so your mileage may vary. All but one were fine after
carefully removing the labels and cleaning the adhesive surface off. Better
to be safe than sorry. You can always buy printable media and a cd/dvd
capable printer, or use a proper permanent marker like those available from
Sharpie...

After having lot of problems while reading labeled DVD's, I found out that |
the label was faulty. So I decided to try some different (8) brands. The
only one that works fine (up to now) is Neato.
Reason of problems was the glue that is used. Most readers are running
relatively warm, which causes the glue to dissolve and the label to become
loose, with air bubbles appearing. Sometimes very small bubbles, but enough
to cause reading errors and sometimes lock-up of the reader.
And as said earlier, in those cases, just removing the label and cleaning
the DVD solved the problem.
In my opinion, it's a shame that so many brands sell a product that does
absolutely not fit for the job. |

The only DVD discs I have had problems with are ones with labels. Buying a
printer that prints directly to discs solved the problem. |

I make 10 to 20 DVDs per month for friends and myself using printed
labels (Neato) and have never had one fail or cause a problem. Some are
now several years old and holding up well.

I suspect the quality of the label material plays a crucial role.

Another person like me who also blows the "don't put labels on DVD myth"
that so many KNOW IT ALLS on here carry on.
I have done 100's and NEVER had one problem. They need to buy a better DVD
burner, not some Ching Foo Yuck brand.
Also no discs named Toyo Fooyung or whatever they call them. Use some
Memorex or other name brand. Hell, I have had GREAT results from Staples
branded DVD-R discs.

Burning success depends on the combination of the burner and the
media. The only way to know is either from your own experience or
credible reports.
However, there are two brands that burn reliably in the widest number
of burners - Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim. See the forum
http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=146146
I am currently working thru a batch of 8x ProdataF01 discs branded by
FujuFilm (Sams's Club) and MemorWrecks (Worst Buy). These would not
burn reliably with a Sony/LiteOn burner, even at 4x, but they do burn
reliably at 8x on a NEC 3540/1.W5.
Your BumFuq brand could work with a particular burner and yet fail
miserably with another particular burner.

Just because they do not burn with YOUR drive does NOT make the discs
unreliable. In MOST cases it is most likely poor firmware of the drive
ITSELF. If a disc is created to the DVD specification it "should" work in
any drive that supports the standard. In reality SOME drives are better than
others at meeting the DVD specifications.

More likely the DVD Drive. Alot of people on here that complain are likely
using $25 el-crappo brand from some Chinese computer store front on the west
side of town.
