Most amps list a distortion figure along with their RMS/Max power
ratings, and unless you're talking about a "flea market special",
those distortion numbers are nowhere near 10%.

So, if you have an amp that's rated at 100W + 100W RMS, you'll be able
to get that much power out of at (if not more) without having to get
into objectionable distortion numbers.

Anyway, you told the original poster to "always buy 38-45 more watts
than you need" because of power losses. That's dumb advice, because
any amp that he's heard before and might be using as a comparison will
have had the same losses.

In other words, if he's listened to another car with a 200W amp and
thinks that's enough power for him, he doesn't need 238-245W for his
car, because whatever losses he's getting from his car's electrical
system probably would have been present in the other car as well.

Which amplifiers in particular can't play at 100 percent power without
having 10 percent distortion? Name them specifically and describe the
method by which you bench tested them to arrive at these numbers. When
you're done doing that, I'll give you a list of amplifiers that have been
benchtested that DO provide full output at less than 1% THD, and I'll
provide links to show you the graphs.

one way amps are rated at 14.4 volts.which is higher than in real
life.

In "real life", my alternator operates at 14.4v.

Quote:
next about 14% of amps max amps are not usable to high distorton.
So you wont be able to use the max power of the amp......

The THD percentage is often near its lowest point at full output, just
prior to the onset of clipping. It depends largely on the amount of
global NFB the amplifier uses and how much small signal distortion is
present (which doesn't really change a whole lot with higher output,
except for VAS loading distortion). So, put simply, it depends on the
amplifier. And put even more simply, you don't know what you're talking
about.

I saw some sony xplod amp for cheap in a walmart and although cheap and
wal mart rings alarm bells i wonder if the sony stuff is reasonable?

Looking for good but not the best stuff..

I picked up a 10" Xplod sub for something like $40 on sale a while
back... put it in a simple 1 cu.ft. box and it gives me a nice solid, if
not earth-shaking, bottom end running off a Kenwood amp. Sounded great
for a $40 driver, right up until one of the Litz wires flaked out where
it runs through the cone... which is odd, if you look at the design
they've used, but of course the design also makes it almost impossible
to repair. Anyway... I'd say they're a good budget sub... I expect Sony
makes a matching "good" budget amp...

I bought a Sony Xplode HU a few years back, with the same thought i
mind, that hey, its a Sony so it must be good. WRONG!! The Sony H
model I have is very tempermental. Its overly sensitive to heat an
cold. If its cold, sometimes the cd wont play. If its hot outside
sometimes I get a disc error and have to reset the HU. But wait, whe
you do that, you loose you settings like EQ, HP/LP, Time, etc....
think if I could turn back the hands of time, I might have considere
something else. But thats my experience with Xplode, and my .0

scott i said buy more power than you need on the max power of a
amp.because youll never use the max of any amp.because of to much
distortion.....
on the thd youll get about what it says within 5%.
