I currently have a very old BOSE setup, which only supports stereo sound,
however, it has a 5.1 speaker setup. I'm thinking about hooking up the
speakers to a rx750 directly, can it be done? is there any other way to
utilise the speakers so i have actual surround sound?
Thanks

You would definitely want to set the 5 speakers to small in the amp. If it can't
be done, don't try any loudish volumes as you may damage the speakers, IMHO.

**Not a chance in Hell. The little Bose cubes cannot handle anything
remotely approaching low frequencies, without being destroyed. Even when set
to 'small' your receiver will deliver frequencies well beyond the abilities
of the Bose speakers.

Buy yourself a set off speakers off eBay like Pure Acouistuics around
$350/$400, I did.

yeah, those speakers look pretty nice, but I already have the BOSE speakers
setup and built into the walls, fairly out of reach as well.

From the other replies it seems like I have to get some new speakers.
How about gettings a new BOSE receiver, would that work with my current
speakers? Although it will be a great waste when it comes to the rx750,
which has its own audio functions.

I have the 750 and a similar problem, in haste I purchased a set of 5
luxman speakers (can be seen on ebay reguarly) which are two steel
casing housing 4 inch and 1 inch drivers. Freq response on these is
spec'd at 120 to 20k and in combination I run a 8 inch Energy sub.

The system works ok but as you can imagine is generally not so flash in
the base department. The sub is a great unit but it is probably asking
a bit much for it to compensate for the lack of low freq response in
the surround speakers.

My solutions will ultimately be as mentioned by other posts to replace
the speakers.

So using the 750 with the Bose speakers could be done however the
performance when compare to other speaker systems is likely to be
lousy.
Check the freq response on the Bose as the 750 has the ability to vary
the sub crossover and you would need to be carfeful how far up the
volume goes depending on what power they can handle.

BOSE = Buy Other Stereo Equipment

The mere mention of Bose seems to evoke emotional & mostly negative
responses - more so than any other brand it seems. I have no opinion on
the brand but am always tempted into reading the comments attached to
Bose posts for this very reason!

**You may as well toss your Yammy then. The ONLY way the Bose speakers will
operate correctly, is with the correct equalisation applied by the Bose
subwoofer (though I use that term very lightly).

Your Bose satellites will not work with your Yamaha.

Bose are like microsoft.......

Great marketing company giving people what looks like it is great and
functional.....
And like microsoft suits a niche market (people who like hearing mids only
none of that nasty treble stuff - in the cube sphere)
I have heard some Bose floorstanders that sounded quite good, however they
were quite old and more akin to normal speakers - ie large...
They spawned the lifestyle system approach that has now given lots of mums
and dads the oooh ahh factor for movies on a budget, as long as you dont
want full musical reproduction.....
I can only assume the really heated attacks come because Bose stuff always
sold at a premium? and was for the rich only?
Musicly a lot of it is bad, but there is a real lot of stuff that is worse
out there that does not get attacked as much....
anyways, my 2c worth (almost worth 2c)
