Hi,

I tape our high school games for our coaches using my analog recorder. The
offensive and defensive coach both want a DVD, so I use S-video cable to dub
to DVD recorder on a DVD + RW disk (not using my computer).

I can't get the SONIC record now softwar that came with my HP computer to
copy the resulting disk.

I don't mind doing the analog transfer once, but I would like to be able to
copy the disk at will thereafter without doing the realtime dub.

What is some cheap software that will do what I need. By the way, I don't
ahve a particularly powerful computer. AMD 3400+ chip with 1GB Ram. I have
some crappy shared video card (Windows says SiS 760 Mirage 2 that is using
128MB of internal RAM.

Thanks,

Mac

P.S. How much for the following:

1. Capture straight to my computer from the Camcorder
2. Have a button (maybe spacebar) that will instantly pause/restart
recording. This way I could cut out all the huddles, chain moves, etc
3. (This would be really cool) Have a button or two on my keyboard that
would direct the capture to one of two files. The defense coach only wants
defensive plays, offensive coach only wants offense. I would like for two
recording files to be open at once, but the stream would only be going to
one of the files depending on which button I push.
4. This has to be pretty clear. When I play the DVD on my TV w ith an
external DVD player. WHen I play it on my computer, it is very grainy. Is
this a function of the crappy video card, or something else?

Maybe your computer DVD writer doesn't do DVD+RW discs?

Will your analog recorder use any other format DVD?

Thank for the idea, but my computer claims to do DVD + RW. I just bought a
compaq, and the sticker on the chassis says "DVD +/1 RW / CD - RW

Sometimes changing brands of DVDs helps.

Just copy the vob files to your hard drive, this will take 10-
15min. Then edit them with www.VideoReDo.com making
your two versions. VRD has a very fast and accurate interface,
you should be able to very quickly create mpg clips to sort as
you wish or create single .mpg made up of your selections.

You would "Save as" to a file for the offensive coach and
then clear the "cut list" and make the selections for the
defensive coach, then "Save as" that to another .mpg file.

You would then have DVD compliant MPEG files ready
to be authored. ( I like TMPGEnc DVD Author but there
are a few others to choose from.)

Your video card is not a problem, I've just recently used
a very old S3 Trio 32/64 2MB PCI card to capture and
author some DVDs. Video is basically 2D as far as video
card requirements are concerned.

Thanks for the good info. I am going to their websit right now. Questions:

1. Do I care about any non *.VOB files on my DVD?
2. Does VideoRedo work with the VOB files natively, or convert to MPEG
first?
3. I already have Sonic Record Now (came with the computer). Will that
create a DVD?
4. If no for (3), what is some cheap or free software for creating the DVD
that can be played on a regular player?

Thanks,

Mac

Just the large .vob files, you may have a VIDEO_TS.vob
that contains the graphics for your menu, you don't need
that.

Basically, in terms of the video data itself, the vob and the
mpg files contain the same things, but the vob has other data
and may be organized differently. VideoReDo can work
with the .vob, in fact the latest versions can make .vob files.
( Don't get any ideas, you want .mpg as your output.)

You might want to give the trial of TMPGEnc DVD Author
a try. It is one of the cheapest of those you pay for, but for
most common DVDs arguably the best. There are free
projects underway but they have a much steeper learning
curve and are still under development.

As I understand it Record Now is a good Burning program.
That should not imply that it does anything else, but Nero and
others have confused the issue of what should be included in a
burning program. It would be able to properly write a
DVD-/+R in the format for a video DVD, but you would need
to have "Authored" the DVD ( created the files and file structure)
before that.

You now have stated this several times, largely ignoring that TDA is heading
in the same direction.

Stop this nonsense. Nero has confused no one.

Maybe your analog recorder puts on some type of copy protection?

Have you tried AnyDVD (load before inserting you "original" DVD), then use
Sonic to copy.

Have you tried copying with DVDDecrypter or DVD Shrink?

Thannks everyone for the help. I took Ken's excellent suggestion of getting
VideoRedo and I am off to the races. It's very easy to cut out the dead
time from the game tapes. Not sure I yet understand how to put everything
in a single file (or have it appear that wa y on DVD), but I'll jump off
that bridge when I get to it.

I used Sonic Record Now to create a DVD from an MPEG, and it worked great,
so I am on the right track.

Once again, thanks to everyone who responded.

I checked the Sonic Record Now web page and saw no
mention of an authoring capability. They mention the ability
to burn, copy and create a disk image of a DVD, but
nothing about authoring. So what do you have when you
use "Sonic Record Now to create a DVD from an MPEG"?

Is there a VIDEO_TS folder with: a VIDEO_TS.IFO file,
..bup files, other .ifo files and .vob files? If they are there,
what created them? If they are not there, the DVD won't
play as a normal commercial DVD would in DVD Players.
It would play in those DVD Players that can play "Raw"
MPEG files.

As to the files for your DVD project; what I would do is
to create a DVD with two "titles" and a main/title menu
that selected between them. One would be for each coach
but both would be on the same DVD. I would also have a
chapter selection menu, for each title, that would use text
labels like "1st Q 2nd D our43Yd line 02:46" for each
"chapter".

The files you put together with VideoReDo would be
those "chapters" I mention above. The clips from your
editing can be "joined" with VideoReDo, into such .mpg
chapter files. The easiest way to join in VRD is to "Open
Video" the first clip, then click the "Joiner" tab and select
"Add Current Project To Joiner List". Then use the "File"
tab and open the next clip (you can just double click on the
clip at this point). Then you add that one to the "Joiner List".

Once you have all the clips you want on the "Joiner List",
select "Edit Joiner List ..." check and make any corrections
you may wish to the arrangement of the clips. Lastly, you
select the "Create Video From Joiner List ..." and give your
new "chapter".mpg a name.

During the Authoring process you would "Add" your
chapter .mpg to the appropriate title, in whatever order
you wish.

At this point I have no idea what you may be using to
actually author the DVD, or even if you are. The description
of "Record Now" doesn't indicate that it can author a DVD.

I use TMPGEnc DVD Author (TDA) and it is very easy to
add and arrange "chapter clips" within the titles (which TDA
calls "Tracks"). It is also very easy to create motion menu
backgrounds for your menus. You could use a clip of the
half-time activities or maybe of the teams running onto the field.

There is a lot more I could go into but first we need to clear
up what kind of DVD you are trying to make. Is it to be an
Authored DVD, or one to play in players that can read "Raw"
MPEG?

Luck;
Ken

Hi Ken,

Thanks for your willingness to help, because I don't know what I am doing.

My DVD has 3 directories: JacketP; OpenDVD and VIDEO TS.

JacketP is empty, and VIDEO TS has the VIDEO_TS.IFO, *.bup, *.vob and other
..ifo files that you mentioned in your message.

The OpenDVD directory, has two files:
1. VPA_vs_Storm 92-05.dvd (it appears this is my Sonic project file, because
when I click on it, Sonic Record Now opens the file.)
2. ClickMe.htm This file has boilerplate notices in many languages. Here
is the English version:

----

1. I transfered the analog video to DVD with my stand aloner recorder.

2. Used DVD Decryptor to create an MPEG from the standalone DVD.

3. Used VideoRedo to cut all the huddles, etc. My scene selection is all
the plays.

4. I would like to create chapter headings for each play. By "headings" I
mean just a "digital mark" so that coaches can pop to a given play pretty
easily. I don't think I'll do titles. The coaches are more interested in
looking at each play than they are in game continuity.

The DVD I made doesn't have any chapters. How can I get VideoRedo to put in
the chapter headers?

Thanks,

Thannks everyone for the help. I took Ken's excellent suggestion of
getting VideoRedo and I am off to the races. It's very easy to cut out
the dead time from the game tapes. Not sure I yet understand how to put
everything in a single file (or have it appear that wa y on DVD), but
I'll jump off that bridge when I get to it.

I used Sonic Record Now to create a DVD from an MPEG, and it worked
great, so I am on the right track.

Once again, thanks to everyone who responded.

Thanks,

Mac

I checked the Sonic Record Now web page and saw no
mention of an authoring capability. They mention the ability
to burn, copy and create a disk image of a DVD, but
nothing about authoring. So what do you have when you
use "Sonic Record Now to create a DVD from an MPEG"?

Is there a VIDEO_TS folder with: a VIDEO_TS.IFO file,
.bup files, other .ifo files and .vob files?

MPEG?

Luck;
Ken

Hi Ken,

Thanks for your willingness to help, because I don't know what I am doing.

My DVD has 3 directories: JacketP; OpenDVD and VIDEO TS.

This is the DVD you made with "Record Now"? Or is it what was
created by your standalone DVD Recorder?

Quote:

How can I get VideoRedo to put
in the chapter headers?

Thanks,

Mac

First, if you are going to use Sonic's MyDVD technology in any
way, I can't help you.

If you want to properly Author a DVD with the chapter points
where ever you want them, that can be easily done. The term
"Title" refers to a part of the structure of a DVD, as laid out in
the DVD Specifications. "Chapter Points" are basically the
"digital mark" you are looking for. They can also be used in a
menu structure, but that is not a requirement.

If what you want is a DVD composed of a number of independent
clips that are selected from a menu, play, then return to that menu;
you should consider DVDLab Pro, or Ulead's Movie Factory
Authoring programs. They have provisions to modify the normal
flow of the movie.

What VideoReDo can do is create clips that are composed of
the audio & video of your plays, that you want to become the
slectable portions of your DVD. When these clips are added to
your Authoring project as "Titles", they are treated as totally
separate "movies". When they are added to a Title, they are
treated as a sequence of chapters, that come one after the other.
So it's how you add these clips to your authoring program that
will determine the initial chapter points. Any good Authoring
program includes the means to add additional chapter points to
those that are automatically created by adding clips.

( By the way you shouldn't need Step 2 above. Just copy the
vob files from the standalone's DVD, to your harddrive and
use VideoReDo directly on them.)

So once you have your "Play"/chapter clips made by
VideoReDo, you need to Author your new DVD(s).

When the new DVD has been Authored you will then
be able to burn it onto a DVD+/-R.
---------------------------------

What I've outlined so far is in general terms, if you want a
step by step description, it would be only "as I would do it",
using my preferred tools.

I use TMPGEnc DVD Author (TDA) whenever I can, so
I'll describe how to author you DVD using that. ( I suggested
the other programs above, because some object to the way
TDA handles multi-page Title menus. With TDA, if you select
a title form any page, after that title has played you return to
the first menu page, not the later page it may have been selected
from. This seems a minor inconvenience to me, it's easy to
navigate to any menu.)

What I would do is make each play a track/Title. (TDA calls
Titles tracks, don't know how that came about.)

To do so, you use the "Add file" button and find the first Play
Clip for your DVD. After you have that added, click on the
blue " Add new track ..." text. This will give you a new track
to add your next Play Clip into. Just repeat this until all your
clips are added.

Next you can label your Play Clips, so that the label will be
carried over to the menus. Just double click on the "Untitled
track 1" of the small box in the right hand column. Then just
type your label, hit enter and move on to the next track.

I would force both a Main menu and Track menus. Even
though the track menu will only have one item, it will allow you
to have it so the coach can repeat that clip with his remote. I
would not use "thumbnails", just Text. ( You need to click on
the "New theme" text at the bottom of the list of themes, to
make your own with only text. The first one is layout 6 #3.)

Set the "Menu display settings" to have both main and track
menus. Set the action after the track has played to "Display
track menu".

The rest is pretty straight forward.

A trick to have the Play Clip repeat automatically, is to have
your Play Clip be a motion menu background, for the track
menu. Make a one second black silent .mpg with VideoReDo
and use that as the video you "Add file" to make your track.
Then during "Create menu" click on the background and replace
what was there with your Play Clip. You would set your motion
menu options for "Additional pictures for background ect" and
set the Play Clip length.

Another way might be to use a single Thumbnail layout for the
track menu, and set the motion menu to Chapter thhumbnail.
You would edit your menu theme and size the thumbnail as you
wished. Any text fields on the background or with the thumbnail
that you didn't want to use, can be shrunk to invisibility and moved
to the edge of the menu. (entering a single space, helps) You could
of course use a text field to enter lines of text to describe the play.

Luck;
Ken

DVDLab Studio, cheaper than Pro will support playlists. This allows You
to control the flow of "Clips", "Tracks", separate movies, whatever You
want to call them.

DVDLab Pro has a chapter branching object that is way cool as it allows
You to control the flow of chapters within the same Movie. This way you
can take one movie, chapter it and play it back in various different ways.

When I make family videos on the first menu I have:

A "Play all button"

A "Chapters" button that goes to a menu that plays a single chapter
then returns. I use Photoshop and pull a relevant object or face for the
buttons. Then I use the text features so the text for any button is only
shown when that button is selected. This way You can get somewhat
descriptive without the menu being too busy.

An "Ego" button that goes to a menu with the kid's faces for buttons.
Say I have a movie with 10 chapters and my daughter Kate is "featured"
in chapters 2,6, & 8. If she selects the Kate button, then only chapters
2,6, & 8 will play.

To mimic this with the studio version You would have to make the
Chapters individual clips beforehand, no big deal.

In regards to the looks good on the TV, lousy on the Computer, or vice
versa issue;

This is because "most" TVs play back video differently than Your
computer monitor. TVs weave together two fields to make a "Frame". Your
computer paints the frame line by line, called Progressive Scan. The
weaving is called interlacing. If Your target viewing device will be the
computer You can have the video "de-interlaced" and it will look good on
the computer but crappy on the TV. If Your target is the TV, leave it
interlaced. Some of the better computer players will automatically
de-interlace for You, so You can leave it interlaced & have the best of
both worlds.

Hi Ken,

The DVD that has the three directories is the one I made with Sonic Record
Now. I just started a project, dragged in the MPEG that I had made with
Video Redo, and about 35 minutes later got the DVD.

VideoRedo has something in Tool|Options|Chapter Marks that may help me.
There is a checkbox for making a chapter mark at each Cut Point. I cut each
play into a separate scene, so would this put in the marks I want?

As you can see I am confused by Chapter Marks. Are they embedded in the
MPEG (as the option in VideoRedo seems to suggest), or are the result of
Authoring a DVD with certain options?

Thanks,

Mac
