Using my Panasonic DMRE50 dvd recorder, I have transferred a number of
my 8mm video cassette to my computer's hard disk. They are recorded
as "VIDEO_TS" files. I have been successful in making copies of on
DVD-R.

But I am unable to import those files to Windows Movie Maker for
editing purposes. Is there an incompatibility issue here, or could
this be caused by another problem?

I also cannot import from a DVD-R in my DVD drive.

Many authoring programs (including Windows Movie Maker as well) cannot
handle VIDEO_TS folders or their contents. They will complain that the file
type is 'unsupported' and not allow you to edit the disk contents.

Several of us on this newsgroup take Panasonic DMR settop recorder disks
(either DVD-R or DVD-RAM) and "re-author" them using a program called TMPGE
DVD Author. This program allows you to edit the files and issue a new disk
with more elaborate menus than you would have if you used the simple menus
produced by the Panasonic and other set-top recorders. You might consider
trying it in the demo version.

We have to ask - what type of editing are you looking at doing?

Adding titles, and better menus, both require the DVD content to be
completely re-worked and while it's not too difficult to do, Windows Movie
Maker does not cut it.

There are some free programs that allow you to extract the DVD content as
Raw Mpeg2 files, or "Elemental Streams" Mpeg2 Video and Audio files. These
are fully editable.

Think of what you want for the final destination for your Video.
