I'm dumping my Hi-8 tapes recorded on a Sony TRV85 (analog) camcorder,
through a TRV350 Sony Digital camcorder and onto disk. All these
tapes are recorded in 4:3 mode as the old camcorder doesn't do 16:9.
However, on one of the tapes, the playback (out of the 350)
sporadically switches from 4:3 to 16:9, which is incorrect.

I can't locate any way to force the 350 to 4:3 playback mode, and even
setting the PB mode to Hi8 doesn't seem to do it. Certainly setting
aspect ratio in record mode is obviously possible but this has no
effect on playback of course.

It would appear the 350 thinks it's getting some ID1 data off the
analog tape (?) telling it to switch to 16:9, for some reason. The
switch occurs exactly at the same place on repeated playback tests,
and seems to remain that way throughout this particular tape. Other
analog tapes still seem to play correctly on the 350 at 4:3 although I
haven't tested every inch of all the tapes yet.

There's no evidence of dirty heads on the camcorder; no video noise or
other anomalies exist.

Any ideas?

tia,

eno

I'll put back my old (digital) signature "analogue technology rules-digital
sucks".
