That's because they stole it from someone else, like NT was stolen
from DEC.

But the hard drive is only capable of recording one program at a time.

With a TIVO unit from DirecTV, you can easily record 2 different stations to

the hard drive at the same time AND playback a 3rd already recorded show.

I don't have a link handy, but I've read
reviews of PC's with at least three Hauppauge dual-tuner cards
installed, recording 6 standard-def TV programs at the same time.

Does anyone else make dual tuner cards?

My guess is that manufacturers aren't willing to increase the cost to
cover a dual tuner setup when their market research indicates not
enough people would pay extra for the feature. Personally, I'd love to
have a quad-tuner model if they offered it.

I don't have cable so I am limited to broadcast shows.

In time when the price drops you could own 2 DVD recorders, just like
people owning more than one VHS recorder then 2 programs coulfd be
recorded at once.

I can get a Panasonic 4-head VCR for $50. I have two VCRs of different
vintages now but one is crapping out from excessive use. So I can
replace it with one Panasonic for $50.

I would be willing to pay up to $100 for a dual tuner HDD recorder.
They can keep the DVD - I have enough of those around here to start a
recording studio.

Does your cable company offer one? I pay $10 a month for a dual tuner PVR
that will record high definition video also. And I can record two shows
simultaneously while watching a 3rd pre-recorded show. They recently came
out with an upgraded model and when I had some issues with mine they came
out and swapped it for the new model. No concerns of onsolescence.

But the hard drive is only capable of recording one program at a time.

Why do you think that?

Because when I'm recording a TV program to the hard drive, I can't do
any other recording on my DVD recorder. It would be nise to be able to
copy a program from the hard drive to a DVD disc while recording a TV
program to the hard drive. It would be also nise to be able to record
from an external souce such as a video camera to the hard drive while
recording a TV program to the hard drive, but this is not possible.
And the reason must be that in the case of my DVD recorder and it's
likely to be other DVD recorders is that they are only capable of
recording one program at a time to the hard drive.

Poor design is the reason.

haven't heard of any that allow you to record two channels at once.
there are however ones with 2 tuners that allow you to record one channel
and watch another at the same time

My dual tuner PVR can record two shows at once in HIGH DEFINITION while
playing back a 3rd from the hard drive.

motorola DVR-6412, as distributed by comcast cable. two tuners.
use it all the time.

it may not be available as a commercial product, since it requires
access to a guide system to program in the tivo fashion, and comcast
provides that. unfortunately, the software was done by m$oft, and is
as clunky as all m$oft products.

Who told you the software in the DVR-6412 as used by Comcast was done by
Microsoft??
