What's your favorite Multi FX unit? |
|
|
Due to the fact that we've been getting shows through here that we're
not even remotely equipped to handle, my boss has asked to to start
speccing new gear. One of the first things we need is a good, rider
friendly multi FX unit. Currently, in our main hall, we've got a PCM 91
for the main FX and a PCM 60 for secondary. The 91 is at least OK and
I'd like to keep it and move it to a secondary position. The PCM 60
is...well, a PCM 60. I'm gonna lose it. I'd love to hear some
reccomendations based on what you use. It's not a "price is no object"
situation, but quality and rider friendliness are primary
considerations.
I'm also gonna be picking up a laptop PC to run SMAART (sorry, Mac guys,
that's what the city specs). Is the Tascam USB122 still the best
interface for it?

I use a Yamaha spx990 and like it a lot (and dead easy to use), but there is
a newer one, the spx2000 which I guess is better - it is the unit that is
incorporated in Yam's new digital consoles (DM2K, PM1D, PM5D). |

Its a shame to lose the PCM60, they are a nice sounding reverb, but then I
like crusty old reverb processors like the AMS RMX16. For something a bit
more modern and rider friendly a TC M2000 should fit the bill, it sounds
good and has a good range of useable effects. Yamaha SPX990s were always
useful to have in a rack but I have yet to try the SPX2000. |

Sound Devices USBpre is probably the best interface.
After that, maybe an M-Audio Duo (discontinued in July but I found one at a retailer last week.) |

i second that
a M2000 is one just about anyone knows how to handle, an spx 2000 is
the same treat. the M3000 works even better ( sound wise)
if you use the TC's you might do without a separate tap delay, it has
a tap function on it i use often. for just a tap delay a M one might
sort you out.
i use an apogee mini me for the smaart

Hi Denny
I love the 91's sounds and it's about as rider friendly as they come, so
if you're looking for another box, you could try something a bit more
user friendly. The TC M2000 is one of my favs for multi-fx, and the
M3000's reverbs are pretty good. They're both (really) easy to use for
visiting techs, unlike the Lexicons (unless you know them), but still
sound excellent.
If you're ditching the PCM 60 you'll still need the second unit to be
good at everything, so the main contenders are probably TC or Yamaha
rather than funkier things like Eventides, etc.
Good luck

I have no idea when I'll get authorization to actually purchase, but
thanks anyway, Michael. It looks tro me like the 300 is pretty much
reverb only, though. Is that correct?

Thanks to all for the suggestions...keep 'em coming! I looked at the
Apogee Mini Me that Marc suggested. It looked great, but more than I
need. Any suggestiones other than the Tascam?

the M300, or the M3000? the M3000 is a multi FX but they talk mostly about |
the reverbs in it because they are about at good as it gets

I ditched my 990 and SPX1000 when I got TC M1's. They just sound better
IMHO. The price is right also. Depending on your app the M1 is great, if
you need higher end then look at the M2000/3000. TC's are just sooooo
smooth.
