Decoding .rec files |
|
|
I am intending to buy a Topfield 5800 hard disk recorder to record TV
programs. It has a USB2 connection to allow hookup to a PC. The recordings
are as .rec files. I live in the UK.
I normally use Virtualdub to make Divx files to playback on a Palm
(currently my capture is via a TV card).
I am not familiar with .rec files. I understand that I can upload them onto
my PC, demux them into MPEG2 and MP3 and then convert them, but it would be
much simpler if Virtualdub (or another program) could deal directly with the
..rec file.
Anyone got any advice.

Go to the Topfield UK forum site or the Australian site, lots of info.
Basically you HAVE to demux the rec file into a video and audio file, then
edit the resulting files in a program like Womble or VideoRedo etc. ( I know
VideoRedo will read directly a .rec file but you can still end up with sync
problems)
A tried and true method is the following:
Demux with ProjectX ( a free java based program but there is an executable
(27 meg) version floating around the web)
Import the mpv (video) and either the m2p or ac3 audio file into Womble
Edit to your hearts delight!
Save as a mpeg file - Womble does not normally re-encode so it is very
quick, a matter of minutes to produce an mpeg file from a 1 and a half hour
movie ready for DVD Authoring or as I do run it into AutoGK to produce a
DivX files.
