Divx on Dvds... |
|
|
Hi there,
I have a question for experts:
is it possible to read DivX burnt onto Dvd +/- R(W) with an home Dvd/DivX
player ?
I've heard a lot about Peekton 6005 Mk II ! What do you think about them ?
Thanks a lot for your answers.
Regards

Yes it is possible. Most dvd / divx players will read Divx 3 4 5 and
xvid at least, some will read wmv and asf also. I have an Ellion
DVX-520C which is typical. It will read dvd -r dvd+r dvd-rw dvd+rw cdr
cdrw. Also DVD and CD audio disks and jpeg files.
Il parait que ce lecteur Peekton 6005 MK II est bien au courant en
France.
"Franchement c'est une pure bombe ce lecteur."
"De la bombe cette platine ! c'est pas pour rien que c'est N°1 au
classement des platines dvd divx !" |

For a list of players that actually can, better check www.divx.com
As for xvid, it is not guaranteed to play on any standalone DVD player.
It looks like the safest bet is to go mpeg2 and DVD format for DVD.
If you want to play on a PC you can use DivX.

Thanks but this doesn't answer my question !!
Is it possible to read many DivX burnt onto 1 Dvd or do I have to burn DivX
only onto 1 CdR ?
An what about those stories regarding the firmware which doesn't upgrade and
Peekton who doesn't comunicate about the 6005 not reading Xvid properly ?
What the heck is this company to deal with customers that way ? |

Reply to first part - Yes it is possible - I regularly record 5 or 6
episodes of a TV series to DVD. I encode the original mpeg files using
AutoGK with the setting 1 CD (700meg). Then I end up with 6 x 700meg avi
files that I copy onto a DVD-rw.
Don't know anything about the Peekton.

You can burn one or many AVI files on a DVD and play them on a divx /
DVD player. You have to burn the DVD as a data disc, and to play all of
a multi session disc you will need to finalize the disc. Some players
(like mine) do not like VBR audio. Most will not play mpeg4 avi files
with Qpel encoding. |

I hope my Peekton 6005 MK II won't turn me crazy !
It seems this issue about it is the option 'Packet Bitstream' that had to be
disabled before encoding !
Thanks a lot to all for your answers !

Why, oh why? would you need to finalize a divx/xvid data disc?
Contemporary DVD players which read these formats do not have the inane
restrictions of archaic mono-function DVD players.
VBR audio certainly can be a problem with a poorly implemented device -
check for updates to the firm-ware. I recall the LiteOn 2001 had similar
problems in its first year of release, then the one-and-only programmer
assigned to the product got it together and fixed it.

Probably true, but I only convert MPEG2 captures to xvid (since divx has
been less than satisfactory, tho paid for and up-to-date) and none of my
stand-alones has ever balked. Of course, the PCs also never have a problem
with xvid - so splitting the monitor signal always works regardless of the
encoding.

Re: Divx on Dvds... |

Why oh why indeed, BJ. My machine works that way, I just assumed it was
generic I suppose.
My Ellion DVX-520C was bought in Dec 2003, has a Sigma em8500 chipset,
and as far as I know there has only been one firmware upgrade released,
during 2004, which cleaned up the GUI & added (previously missing)
support for files to be arranged in folders, and since then nothing...
VBR support was seen in wish lists posted on forums, along with better
FF / RW seeking, & some other niggles.
I looked at the firmware ISO before burning it to a CD, and i was
intrigued to see uCLinux BusyBox. |

Nope, I often have two or three sessions on a DVD+RW and my player will
play them perfectly, even if the disc's not finalized.

Audio: Lame MP3 is fine too.
Video: they'll definitely NOT play a movie in DivX Pro format.
I used to have a Philips DVP630 that passed out some weeks ago, and
sometimes I got a negative picture in some DivX 5 vids.
