[XviD] Bitrate vs. Quality?! |
|
|
Hi all,
{I could not find an XviD newsgroup -- my apologies in advance for off-
topic-ness. Flames ignored.}
I've been ripping some cartoons using DVDD / Gordion Knot / XviD. They
come out at ~940/130 bitrate, with a resolution ranging from 384x288 to
512x384. They're 175MB rips / all ~22 minutes' length.
I downloaded some of the same series. They range from ~125MB - 175MB in
size. Other info re: these downloaded episodes:
- Also XviD
- Same series, characters, voices, etc.
- All 640x480
- All 192Kbps audio bitrate
- All ~22 minutes' length
- Look better. Sound the same (no Sennheisers to test ;))
- *SIGNIFICANTLY SMALLER*
Although they look better, their video bitrate is invariably lower
(sometimes /much/ lower -- down to 555Kbps in one episode, and it still
looked great!).
Could someone please tell me how this can be? Any general tips on opti-
mising _quality_ for DVD rips and any discrepancies I should be aware of
ripping cartoons vs. photorealistic media?
I don't mind spending some time ripping my media to share it, but when I
spend ages reading through FAQs and manually fine-tuning software then
finding much smaller, higher quality files. . .
Any helpful information appreciated!

auto gordian knot is fine for beginners, but if you read up on virtualdub
and avsynth you can encode with lots of variables and often end up with
better results.
read up on doom9.org and sites like that.

That's good advice. In particular read up filters. The right selection
of filters can make a tremendous difference in the quality of the
final encode and the bit rate used. |
