I get the feeling that LG is like Bose.
They look very nice and have done a great job on marketing but are actually
pretty ordinary.

Judging from how often this ng sees disgruntled LG owners, Id agree.
I would never buy anything remotely assocaited by Korea, even if my Hyundai
is made there :P

Ok, most of the time on usenet you only hear rants, very rarely praise. |
I work in the IT industry, and love LG stuff. Of all of the gear over
the years it just lasts. Like any manufacturer, they do get failures. I
have also got a 68cm LG Goldeneye TV, which I compared to several other
units before I bought it. It has a great picture. I also bought a 4721p
dvd player, which has done sterling service, but just been replaced with
a Pioneer 676a. It is now replacing the kids cruddy ole Digitrex.
Can't speak for Bose but I hate Sony with a passion, over priced, under
performing, unreliable crud. I have seen sooooooo many cd drives get
binned it is not funny. I have friends in the Audio-visual industry,
that attest to the same thing.
Anyway public perception is a hard thing to beat, and judging on the
spate of Rear projection units being bitched about, even I would be
cautious. I have never even seen a LG fridge tho;-).

Re: LG |

LG has pretty good prices.
I found that while the screens are adequate, korean electronics do not
drive them appropriately. Let me tell why:
When you watch ordinary TV, which is 4/3 format, you may want to stretch
it so that it cover an area designed for 16/9 format and make the image
bigger. The way TVs do that is that they stretch the side more than the
center.
All this is done by a processor, that samples the signal and "decides"
where to display each pixel of each image.
Now this is a resource intensive business, and the timing that dictates
the position on each pixel much be very precise and repeatable.
The same is true when zooming or letterboxing DVDs, be it component or
s-video. In 720p progressive scanning, the burden doubles.
If the procesor timing is jittery, you will find that vertical lines are
somewhat jagged. Moreover, if the vertical line is moving, you will
experience aliasing, that makes pixel jump from position to position
even more noticeably.
You will notice it especially with high frequency pictures, like someone
who has a striped shirt and is moving. High frequency pictures do not
typically appear in cartoons or computer animation movies, which is I
think is why you are very likely to see "Nemo" or "Shrek" when viewing
screens at your local store :)
Moreover, this is not something that you can check for by looking at
specifications, unfortunately.
I'd suggest that you bring your own DVD when shopping around for
plasma/LCD televisions.

I have an LG fridge that is ok. Their monitors are pretty good. Nice
picture and realiable. Their CD and DVD drives seem to hold up ok as well.
I agree with you about Sony. Total crap for the money. I have 2 friends
with Sony Tvs that sent them back under warranty and totally got stuffed
around. I wouldn't buy one.

Re: LG |

I believe their IT stuff is quite good, my LG CD-RW is fine, and my parents
have an LG CRT monitor althought nothing compared to my LCD its still quite
nice.
Their after sales support however is apparantly abysmal from all reports on
here, and is on notgoodenough's "Top 10 gripes" constantly. Mind you from my
experience of Panasonic's after sales support they are no better.
LG's home entertainment seems to look quite good but in terms of performance
does not seem to be teriffic value for money compared to other brands.

Re: LG |

I assume you are talking about rear projection. If so then
this is caused by the conversion of an interlaced signal
into a progressive scan single to drive the LCD (or DLP)
in the projection unit.
The same problem occurs when watching TV on a PC (PC screens
are all progressive scan).
http://www.dscaler.org/screenshots/index.htm
If you are talking about a CRT then it sounds like they did
the cheap method of 50Hz to 100Hz conversion. There are 2 ways
of doing 50Hz to 100Hz conversion. The first method stores a
single frame and simply shows it twice. Since a full frame is
made up of odd and even frames, the TV displays "odd, odd,
even, even". This stops the 50Hz flicker but causes the
tearing artifact to become visible. The second method involves
storing both the odd and even frames and then showing "odd,
even, odd, even" which stops the flicker and doesn't cause any
tearing effect.
