I have a Sony Digital8 (TRV240) camcorder. It was purchased in the US,
so I assume is considered an NTSC model although I think it can output
either format (NTSC or PAL). I am currently living in the UK and need
to buy some more tapes for it. Can I go to any audio/video store and
buy any Hi8/Digital8 tapes to use?
I didnt know if there was difference in the media, or if I could use
any type.

Thank you,
Brian

Same tape.

It is possible that the playing time differs a bit, since NTSC is
about 30 frames per second and PAL is around 25 fps.

I seriously doubt that an NTSC camcorder for the American market can
output PAL. Of course, I don't know exactly what variant you might
have bought...But the manual I downloaded for the US-Market TRV240
says it is an NTSC camcorder, and if it is to be used on a TV
overseas, it requires an NTSC-capable TV. See page 193, if your
manual is the same as mine :-)

There has been some chatter on this NG in the past about using
different brands of tape. It seems that there are some tapes whose
lubricant conflicts with other tapes' lubricants, causing head
clogs. Best bet: use only one brand of tape. I think the problem may
no longer exist, but I'm not sure.

HTH,
Gino

AFAIK, yes there is (though don't know which). My TDK 8 mm tape has a golden
8 and below PAL/SECAM.Better send the camera nack to a relative in the USA,
and buy a PAL camera in Europe.Mine cost only 400 euro with credit, and the
tape only 4.30 euro.

Thanks gents. I went ahead and bought a few Sony Digital8 brand tapes.
I brought it home, filmed a couple things and then watched it.
Everything looked fine on playback, so I am assuming it works.
Also, I probably dont know what I am talking about with the PAL/NTSC.
I thought that it would do it, but maybe not. Will have to investigate
later.

Thanks again.
