Mrs Squirrel and I like to watch movies when we are camping. Our VW
camper has limited DC power (a small lead-acid battery). Presently we
are watching movies on my laptop. These would either be commercial DVDs
which I have purchased, or WMVs on DVD discs that I have created by
downloading movies from our home TiVo and have converted from .mpg to
..wmv format (using Windows Media Encoder).

The laptop consumes a lot of power: about 4 amps (running off its car
adaptor) when playing a movie. By the time a two hour film is done,
we've chewed through 8 ampere-hours. I'd like to find a portable DVD/WMV
player that sucks less power, but also has a reasonably large screen,
and can handle DVD discs with WMVs. I've Googled around and have not
come up with much. Maybe someone here can help me find a video player
that plays commercial DVDs and DVD data discs with WMVs, has a screen
size of at least 10 inches, and runs off a car adaptor (12VDC).

Maybe something like:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/portablemediacenter/default.mspx

It's not 10" but it does play WMV files. I don't know of any standalone DVD
players (whether portable or not) that play WMV files.

The alternative (still not 10") is Archos:
http://www.archos.com/products/av_700/
Again no WMV files, since this one runs on Linux, but it's got a bigger
screen and a bigger hard drive.

Other than that it's a notebook or a Tablet PC.

http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers.php?DVDname=&Submit=Search&Search=Search
&wmv9=1&chipset=&country=&orderby=Name&hits=25

According to videohelp.com, there are only 3 players that support wmv at
all, and it must be wmv9....so chances of a portable outside of a notebook
or tablet pc is probably correct as Cari stated.....

Cari and Biz,

Thanks for helping me look. Yep, I reckon that unless Mrs Squirrel and I
want to sit REAL CLOSE together and wear our strongest reading glasses
to watch a film on one of those portables with mingy little screens,
we'll need keep using our laptop to watch DVD/WMV movies.

Um, is there a forum or site that I might keep my eye on for news of
something that will fit our requirements? Portable DVD player that can
handle commercial DVDs and DVD data discs I've burned with WMVs. 12 VDC
operation, 10'' screen or larger, lower power consumption than my laptop
(4A at 12VDC, or 48 watts).
