I need a sound editor to help me replace the sound effects in an old dos
game. I used the SOX converter to convert the sound effect file to a
wav. All that did was add a 44 byte header (RIFFl%..WAVEfmt
..............+......dataH%..) and a single byte on the end. The
resulting file was reported as a 88kbps 16 bit mono 5khz PCM.

So I need to create another file in the same format and exactly the same
length with all the new sound effects starting at the same place in the
file as they do in the original.

Can anyone suggest a basic sound editor which would let me place samples
precisely and save in that format?

I'd give Goldwave a try. goldwave.com

The rate it's played in the game is about 5512 as far as I can tell.

Thanks I'll give it a go. I've tried Audacity but it doesn't let you
timeshift exactly easily. You can't type in a number to move a sample a
certain distance AFAICT. The only other audio editor I've used was some
Creative one that came with my old SoundBlaster 16. It had that but IIRC
it never let you select "other..." for a rate though.
