Buying DVD recorder |
|
|
Looking at buying DVD recorder with Hard Drive- currently got LG combo
DVD/VCR - want something that will allow me to copy existing VHS tapes
(lots of footy games I want on DVD instead) plus allow me to save shows
to Hard drive to watch later with occasional burning good games to keep
(both from FTA & Foxtel digital)
Do have DVD burner on laptop, but is it easier to have one box to do it
all???
Looking at spending around $1,000 - any suggestions most appreciated.

The panasonic E85H is a great unit. It has several inputs, including
composite (for your VHSs), RGB (great for Fox digital) and S-video. You
can record to the HDD, edit out ads and burn to DVD-R easily. Only
downside is the analogue TV tuner (all DVD recorders at the moment have
these). If you want something decent from FTA, you can hook it up to a
STB. Retails for around $1200.

PC easier ? Definetly not though this route offers a world of flexability
albeit with extra complexity. You can still capture on your set top
DVD/HDD recorder and transfer it to your PC for further editing, adding
titles, professional menus etc etc.
If the VHS tapes have macrovison that will present a problem, you will need
another box to get you around that.
The Panny or Pioneer units will do the job nicely. I prefer Panny. Don't
get a recorder without a HDD.
Only caveat is the lack of a digital tuner.

I would have thought a STB with PVR and a DVD recorder without HDD would be
a better combination than a DVD recorder with HDD and a STB.

Not for my situation but I can't speak for you ...
How much archiving do you do for example, your solution will be in real
time and still undergo an analogue stage, the new Panny recorders use 8 x
burners and even my old E-100 uses a 4x burner. I can get the data off
the HDD quickly, eg in LP mode to -RAM a 1 hour show takes about 8 minutes
to high speed dub, this is especially useful for sharing and to copy off to
-RAM for editing on my PC for professional archiving (eg professional
menus, frame accurate ad cuts etc) for archiving to -R it's even quicker.
I record some EPSN for a mate with a Panny but no PAY-TV, I record to HDD
and then high speed dub to DVD-RAM, works a treat.
I also high speed dub shows off the HDD on the E-100, to DVD-RAM to watch
on other Panny DVD recorders in the house.
That being said, I could live with a PVR and no DVD recorder, I could not
live with a DVD only recorder.

I have been toying with the idea of a DVD recorder and like the idea of a
HDD. If the DVD recorders had digital tuners I wouldn't have to think twice.
My perfect machine, and I imagine most other peoples would be a DVD recorder
with HDD and twin digital tuners. So, to get the closest to this today I was
thinking of teaming up a Topfield twin tuner with PVR and a DVD recorder. Is
there a better configuration?

Agreed, if the new Panny E500 had twin digital tuners, I would have been
there in a flash. Although the ability to transfer MPEG-2 via ethernet
would have also been good (bloody DRM sigh...)

The only problem is that video is transfered in real time. ie frigging
slow. If you plan to swap recorded shows (ie dub from HDD to DVD-RAM or
RW and give to a mate) or archive shows (to -R+R) I would suggest a
HDD/DVD recorder is going to be better, even though the anlogue tuner is
a kick in the guts. For example I can write a 1 hour show to DVD in
minutes using high speed dubbing (ie much like you copy a file on your
computer) eg the DS-9 and Voyager Star Trek marathons on PAY TVs TV-1
woud have been a nightmare to transfer in real time from the HDD to DVD.
Go the PVR if all you want to do is timeshift i.e record and watch later.
I would probably go this route if I had to, today, as I find I am
archiving very little compared to what I thought I would do. My
"machines" of choice as of today, in order, would probably be:
http://d1.com.au/hmc/hmc_highlights.html
(this has an EPG assuming you have broadband, that puts it WAY up the
top)
then the Topfield
and then the Panny. (the 95 will be cheaper if it gets here, then the
500)
I would make ths choice depending on my needs at the time and for the
short term but the D1's EPG is frigging tempting !
That being said, nothing copes with HDTV properly (that I am aware of), I
see HDTV/ PVR/ Blu ray being the future and DVD being the past.

Might just wait I think...surely they will start putting digital tuners in
DVD recorders eventually.

I also suggest emailing <insert recoder brand of choice> and telling them
your sentiment. Unless we are proactive nothing will change.
