Hi folks.

Would it be a problem wiring a single speaker into both left and right
outputs, getting mono from stereo? I don't want to find out I'm stupid
by damaging equipment. ;)

Yes, there's a problem. You will be shorting one amp with the other.

Don't you have a mono button on your stereo ?? Then you can connect to just
one of the channels, but get the full sound.
