My DVD writer does not recognize 8x DVD-R as writable at 4x; it falls
back to writing at 2x. I tried Memorex and Maxell DVD-Rs and they both
have the same issue. If I put in a 4x DVD-R it can write it at 4x.

I have flashed my DVD firmware to the latest version (GSA-4040B Version
A304 Firmware Update) and I am still having the problem. I used DVD
Identifier and it said the discs were only recognizable at 2x (or was
it 2.4x) but not 4x, so it must be a drive issue.

Is there anything I can do to have it write to an 8x DVD-R at 4x?

If that's the case then that really sucks. Seems to be a firmware
issue. In another thread I'm trying to avoid a similar scenario using
16x DVD +R in a Plextor 708A (8x max) by asking first. Better speak to
someone at Plextor.

Just spoke to someone there and basically they said if you want to be
sure of 8x then get 8x instead of 16x media. So that's what I'll be
doing unless someone can say "Yes, brand X's 16x DVD +R will write at
8x on that writer". It's a shame since getting 16x instead of 8x media
makes more sense since I'll be getting a 16x writer sometime later this
year.

Sucks. Why do you want to write 8x at 4x?

In my experience, you should write a disk at the advertised speed.

Assume the maximum speed of the drive is 4x, at least that's what I
did.

Go here and enter your model number;

http://www.videohelp.com/dvdwriters

You'll see that some have the same complaint as you while others are
burning 8x media at 4x. One person even claims 5x with 8x media.

Yes, the writer is only a 4x writer. And I would have bought 4x
DVD-Rs, but the store I buy them at (Future Shop in Canada) is no
longer selling 4x for the brands I use.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm just reading through the comments now.
