I'm a newbie and a cheapskate. Cannot set up dvd player. Keeps rolling from right to left and the frame is not centered. Is there a fix, or did I just buy junk?

It might be that you have the player set for progressive scan and your TV
is interlaced (or vice versa).

Supposedly the TV and DVD player are progressive.

The DVD player's default setting was likely for interlaced mode. Have you
changed it to progressive?

I don't think there is a place to change this setting. I've got it working with composite cables, but it doesn't work with component cables. I'm going to try S-video cable next. Bad component cable, bad connectors on TV? I'll keep narrowing the problem down.

My DVD player has progressive output only to the component jacks. When
it's in progressive mode, there is no output to either composite or
S-video. I don't have a progressive scan TV, so am not familiar with all
its operations, but here's my guess regarding your situation: Your TV is
normal interlaced, so the DVD player output is compatible when it's via
composite or S-video. Output to the component jacks is progressive, and
therefore incompatible with your TV. (???)

Hmm! ... a real puzzler, then. Is it possible for a progressive scan TV
to be set for interlaced mode? It seems that a progressive TV would work
best (perhaps only?) with component inputs. The fact that it has
composite and S-video inputs, and those work OK, makes me suspect that it
can operate in interlaced mode. Or, perhaps a DVD player can produce
progressive output to all outputs, and just the component output is
faulty, as you suspected originally. (??) As I said earlier, I'm not all
that familiar with progressive scan components ... sorry!

I guess the best course of action is, first, to check your TV manual to
see if it can operate in interlaced mode. Next, check the DVD player's
manual for setting the output mode, or to find out what type of signal is
output to the various jacks. Finally, feed the player's outputs into
other TVs, both progressive and interlaced, and see what works and what
doesn't. That should identify the source of the problem. It sounds like
your player is new. Take it back to the dealer and run the tests there if
you don't have access to other TVs.

Good luck!
