Time Delay for Power Amp Startup and Shutdown ? |
|
|
I have an Adcom G555 for my mains and a homebuilt Leach DBA for my sub, each
of which draw enough power on startup to dim the lights a bit (the Leach has
an MOV to control this problem or it would probably blow the breaker). I
currently make sure that the power amps go on last and are shut off first to
protect the speakers from transient thumps.
Is there a way or a product with appropriate time delays built in that would
automatically accomplish this same function so that I can have a master
power switch for the entire system?

There are a few out there. One such device would be the
Furman power sequencer model PS-8 or PS-8R.

Randy Slone has a couple nice devices in his book, there are also some
schematics on the Elliot Sound Products site -- I use a surplus relay driven
by an IRFD110 -- the relay has a 10 ohm, 35 watt resistor in series with the
power line. The maximum current draw is thus 110V/10R = 10A. The device
waits about 200 milliseconds to completely power on. You have to make sure
that the FET discharges, however, with a ground return circuit.
It gets pretty nasty if you startup and quickly restart -- it isn't as
simple as it looks.

I am using a rather large dual power amp system. I leave the sound system on
24/7. I simply turn the volume down to zero when it is not in use. This is
the best resolve for the problem. The idle current is fairly low, therefore
there is no excessive heat or wear. I have this system since about 1988, and
it has only been shut down when changing locations one time, and during
power failures.

Hi Magnus,
If you are not allergic to DIY simple circuits, there are elegant delays you
can build yourself. Basically they take 12V in, delay, send out 12V which
triggers a 12V relay. 12V relays are easy to find even with high power
ratings if you are a picky one for current concerns. The function is a
simple controlled capacitor charge until the cap reaches critical voltage
which switches a transistor to output. You can tune them to which ever delay
you want by adjusting R1 and C1. The stated values are good for about 90
seconds of delay which is good for tube amps to pre-heat. Delay function is
linear so half the values, half the delay. Let's see, I don't have a
download source, I'll email you the circuit.
