16X DVD +R for Plextor 708A |
|
|
Are there any issues with 16X DVD +R media and the above 8X only
capable writer? Which of the following brands would be more suitable;
TDK
Verbatim
Memorex

You could - of course, avoid paying the extortionate prices of brand names
and get decent dye DVD+R.

I've had serious coaster problems with some lesser brands. Even those
that burned and verified okay were just barely making it at 1x playback
based on Nero CD-Speed. Bought Memorex (CMC MAG in this case) 16x on my
way home from work yesterday, they write fine at 8x with the 708A.
Takes 7 minutes and 40 seconds to burn a full DVD. At that rate I won't
be getting a 16x writer until DL media prices plummet. This is a second
lease on life for the 708A, had it for around 2 years writing at 4x.
Bought it when 8x media wasn't even available. |

The NEC 3540A seems to get the best reviews in my neck of the woods.
But seriously, unless you're using their DL feature, 16x writers
represent diminished returns when compared to 8x writers. It's not like
going from 4x to 8x where you see writes in about half the time (15
minutes is long compared to 8 IMO), you're talking 6 minutes versus 8.
Those two minutes are neither here nor there especially if you're
verifying after writing. And if you aren't using their DL feature until
media prices go down then you're probably better off waiting on an even
better future writer.
