I have an AVI file that plays only in WinAmp. It starts playing in WMP or
DivX player, but stops after a few seconds. I checked the AVI header and it
uses XVID4 for video and OGG for sound. I did a little search on google and
most hits were for Linux platform. I guess there must be some
incompatibility in the file that confuses most of the players. I wanted to
reencode the file with VirtualDub, but when I open it, it gives a message
that it cannot recognize the video type. Any tips how I could make the file
compatible with most players (my platform is WinXP)? Thanks.

Well, Virtual should be ablee to handle the XviD format, but I'm not
sure it can handle OGG audio. So, if you can re-encode the OGG audio
to MP3 audio, Virtualdub should handle things okay.

Just note that may encounter an audio synch problem when you
re-multiplex the audio and the video.

Problem is that VirtualDub refuses to do anything with the file, it says it
cannot recognize the file format and that's it. I noticed that the AVI file
does not start with RIFF marker as normal AVI, but with OggS. This is
probably the problem. Do you know of any SW for Windows that could handle
such files? I guess it was not encoded on Windows.

VirtualDubMod can deal with OGG audio, but I don't know whether
regular VD can or not. Even if it can, two files are needed either in
the VD folder or in WINDOWS\system32: ogg.dll and vorbis.dll.

Ignore if this has already been suggested and tried. I haven't seen
all of the thread.
