Wireless "G" networking-When? |
|
|
Anyone know if/when TiVo will support Wireless G? I'd like to add the TiVo
to my wireless network, but have been holding off awaiting support for G. I
am assuming that G will allow faster transfer of data, pictures, etc. from
the PC to the TiVo...am I correct?

Dave,
Not until they fix the USB 1.1 port you talk to the Tivo with. That's very
slow.
But, your wireless G will probably be faster than my wireless B. 8>)

I'd guess never, at least not until TiVo Series 3, or whatever the next
major revision is...

Go for 'b' -- or wired. Your 'g' network can accept 'b' clients.

The USB ports on the TiVo are limited to USB 1.1 by software. USB 1.1
is not fast enough to support the extra speed of 'g' compared to 'b', so
there's no benefit to supporting 'g' unless the USB ports get faster.

Of course if you're buying equipment now, go ahead and buy the G even if
you can't utilize it, since the cost difference is incidental and it
is backwards compatible with b. Also make sure the equipment supports
802.11i as well (more commonly known as WPA2), all the new equipment
should support it (anything WiFi certified anyway).
There's no real drawback to 802.11g right now if you're buying new stuff
even if you're limited by USB speeds.

802.11i? Never heard of it.
Any examples of modems/routers/gateways that support it?

Whatever you do, _DON'T_ google "802.11i router".

I run a Linksys "G" wireless router and Netgear "B"wireless USB device. The
response time is MORE than fast enough! |

As noted, there is lots of information on it out there. The Wi-fi
alliance has information here:
http://www.wi-fi.org/OpenSection/protected_access.asp
Note that all new "Wi-Fi" certified equipment *must* be 802.11i compliant.
This page allows you to search for compliant products:
http://www.wi-fi.org/OpenSection/certified_products.asp?TID=2
I noted it because 802.11i is fairly new and not well known yet. Now
it's slighly better known!

Rumor is before the end of the year, both USB2.0 drivers and 11g
support are supposed to be part of the TiVoToGo release.

Of course, even without 802.11g support, USB2.0 makes it easy to do the
job: wired ethernet adapter plugged into a 802.11g access point's 100Mb
port, and then other wireless devices as needed.
I still can't figure out why people who are whining about lack of support
for any particular wireless standard don't just do this for every device
that has wired Ethernet capbilities. Unless your devices are all very
evenly spread around your house, this is quite economical to do.

Too much clutter, IMHO.

Only if your devices are evenly spread around your house. I've got 3 or 4
things in my "entertainment rack" that can be networked. One wired
hub/switch and one wireless connection (either on a device that supports
more than one, or a WAP), and you're in business.
Then, too, every single TiVo has an input for TV that has to come from
somewhere. If you got a bunch of TiVos that are in far-flung corners of
your house, you already have a wire that runs to *all* of them. It's
not that hard to run another one.
