DVD recorder that plays while it records to HDD? |
|
|
I am in the market for a dvd recorder with a hard drive and a tv tuner.
Do any of the current models allow you to record to the hard drive from
a source like the internal tv tuner, and at the same time allow you to
watch a dvd movie from the internal dvd drive. This question came up
because I wondered if I was recording a tv show, how you could then
watch a dvd movie at the same time. I suspect I would need a standalone
dvd player to do this.
Thanks
Bernie

All the Panasonic recorders do time slip which means you can be
recording either on the hard drive or onto the media and then play
thestart while its still recording. |

This is a standard feature for HDD/DVD recorders. Panasonic are probably the
most common models but I actually prefer the JVC where timeslip is active
from the moment you switch on.

Toshiba SX32 does this. |

I would not buy a recorder that does not do this. My Panny E100 does.
One of the benefits of owning a DVD/HDD recorder !

With the Panasonics, not only can you watch a DVD at the same time, you can
watch anything previously recorded on the HD, even the program you're
recording! The only thing you can't do while you're recording is editing.

I hope other people are having better luck with Panasonic products than I've
had. EVERYTHING I've bought over the last several years with the Panasonic
brand name, including - but not limited to - a camcorder and two VCRs, has
self-destructed shortly after the warranty period ended.

No problems here (2 x Panny recorders). I suspect though that they are no
different to any other big electrical manfacturer in terms of failure rate.
SONY and JVC are the standouts for me in terms of gear crapping itself.

No matter what bran dof vcr you buy they all die just after the
warranty period. I own a panasonic e20 recorder which I've had since
they came out a few years back. Cost me $2500 when they came out.
Now own a e85 which I have had for a short while. |

I was very rough on my VCRs. I was constantly hitting rewind to
see/hear something again, often a dozen times or more when watching a
single show. As a result the VCRs usually started to break down after
a year or two.
I do the rewinds with my VCR/DVD Recorder too, but I assume they don't
put any more strain on the DVD mechanism than just playing a disc? And
with the combo I can even watch a tape by recording it to DVD-RAM and
watching it in chase mode. That way, if I need to rewind to see
something it is being done on the DVD Recorder and not putting a
strain on the VCR. I get perfect still frame and slow motion too.

I'm still using three old JVC SVHS VCRs that are between 15 and 18 years
old! They're built like tanks and almost that big. (They don't slide off the
top of the TV when you push a button on the front of 'em.) One of them (a
6900 model) has had almost daily use and has never caused a problem.

Yeah those old JVC's were workhorses. Couldn't kill em. I also still have
one that is approaching 15 years, an SVHS model that still plays tapes as
good as new.

Most of the older consumer products, from VCRs to fridges, used to last |
longer since they were built with durability in mind. Nowadays most products
have a lot of plastic parts that will break if you blow too hard. My
neighbour & I both replaced a warm fridge in 2003, hers dated back to 1968,
mine to 1998.
The flipside is that all those things used to be more expensive too,
especially if you take into account the income levels & consumer prices of
the time... |
