Region 2 DVD's |
|
|
Hello,
I am sorry for this newbie question but...
I just bought a 7-set DVD series from a UK web store as a gift for someone
in the US. Unfortunately, nowhere on the website did it say anything about
format incompatibility (although it did mention Region 2) and the recipient
cannot view the DVD's. The store is willing to give me a refund because they
do not make a US version of the DVD but, before doing that I would like to
explore the possibility of converting the discs. Can someone explain if this
is possible and what is involved (hopefully it won't cost more that the
original set of discs!)?
Thanks,
-GB

If you have a dvd burner in your PC already, besides the cost of blanks you
can do it for free...
www.videohelp.com
www.doom9.org
www.digitalfaq.com
search for PAL to NTSC conversion...

There are two issues here
1) PAL vs. NTSC.
IF the discs are in PAL format and you're playing them on NTSC USA
devices, your DVD player had better support PAL to NTSC conversion, or
you will have to a) buy a player that handles such (Philips dvp642), or
b) convert the disc video yourself (DVDx with frame-rate conversion ->
avi file on HD -> MPEG-2 converter -> NTSC converted video burned to DVD).
2) Region lock.
dvd decrypter to another blank DVD handles this.
unlocking the DVD player to remove region handles this.
www.videohelp.com and www.rpc1.org -> for your dvd player.
Philips dvp642 handles this - no region = plays everything w/o
conversion.
a player like the philips dvp642 is the best choice - you'll play
anything and everything w/o worry. |

I agree with everything you said except teh 642 is an absolute piece of
junk, terrible picture quality, washed out, poor mpeg decoder, crappy dac's,
you name it, this thing is complete junk. Not much more to expect from a
$70 player... |

I'm perfectly satisfied with my DVP642 and don't see any of those
problems here. Now if you want to rag on the awful remote, that's
alright with me. <g>

There are problems with a few broken machines, and yes, the DVP642 won't
compare to a top-notch DVD player for video output quality, but for
the majority of buyers, a very good buy esp. at this price for the
m.vision/region free & dvd/cd/mp3 cd/jpeg cd/divx/xvid/mpeg-4 playback
capabilities as well as auto PAL to NTSC conversion of disc video.

tips, etc.
IMO, a highly recommended player that will do just about everything
nicely, and one of the very few DIVX/XVID/MPEG-4 players that do a
decent job for <$80. |

**Another player: I use a Magnavox 458/17 that I got onsale at Circuit
City for $40-45 for PAL/NTSC conversion. I only use it for the rare
PAL disc or burnt DVD. For everything else, I have a 5-year-old
Philips/Magnavox player. Occasionally, the oldie won't play a new disc
so I use the newer one and I don't have any complaints on the quality.
I have a Philips 642 but I haven't used it yet.
The 458 will convert PAL region 0 discs without any hacking. If you
have an R2 (for instance) you use the remote to hack it, it's very
simple. It plays +R and while it does play -R, there's minute
hesitations occasionally. I don't know if it plays DIVX or the others.
Here's a DVD Benchmark test at Hometheaterhifi.
http://206.225.87.49/volume_7_3/dvd-benchmark-part-1-video-9-2000.html
Scroll down to Results...Benchmark Tests...HERE and go from there. If
you decide to look at all the players, it's quite the webpage :) Don't
go there if you don't have broadband. Scroll down and you'll see
pictures and indepth comments. Whoever does the tests prefers the
Magnavox to the Philips (at least in terms of video quality, not in
the ability to play DIVX etc.)

Pioneer DV-588. Sells for about $120. Plays everything the 642 does but
actually does it well, in fact in some cases VERY well, and it also plays
DVD-A and SACD discs...At $80 the 642 is still way overpriced...
