I would like to put a DVD recorder on my computer to archive home recordings
of digital video. I don't know what how much video I can expect to get on
each DVD. I have heard everything from 3 minutes of video per gig to more
than I would ever use. Not knowing this, I don't know if a dual layer
recorder is necessary. Help would be appreciated.

From 1/2 and hour to about 3 hours, but at that long quality starts to get
sacrificed, you can really hammer back the quality and fit upto 6 hours on a
single layer disc but that's silly.

A Dual Layer disc can easilly hold up to 3-4 hours of reasonable quality
video, but the killer is the price of the blank discs and compatibility with
DVD Players, they are not as compatible as single layer DVD-R.

1. Dual layer media is very expensive (10-13 dollars each).
2. Dual layer recordings are very incompatible with playback DVD
units....less than 50%
3. The cost of dual layer media has had 6 months to come down and has not.

Dual layer recorders, on the other hand, are little more expensive than
others. I suggest the Pioneer.

Therefore, get a dual layer recorder but don't expect to use it for dual
layer.
