wireless usb for 01v96 studio manger = no snake? |
|
|
I've heard rumors of being able to run an 01v96 by laptop via a
wireless usb connection, but i can't seem to find any information on
wireless usb that is not a networking device. Can anyone educate me on
this? Has anyone tried this?
Thanks,
Mark

Like you I have started looking into this.
I would think a usb hub designed to run wireless printers might work. The
hub plugged into the board with a wireless card in my laptop.
Let me know what you find and I will update if I find something that will
work.

Hard to find wireless USB. Wireless MIDI will work, but it might pay to
switch off the metering functions as midi is slow. Opt #3 is Remote
desktop. Using 2 computers with wifi, you can operate computer A with
computer B's keyboard mouse and screen. "A" stays put and controls the
gear while "B" controls "A" and goes remote with you. This software is
standard with Windows XP.
As far as no snake is concerned, I sure wouldn't want to run a show with
just the laptop. You can only move one fader/knob/switch at a time with
a mouse. While remote capability is a valuable tool for tuning the
system, tweaking the monitors from on-stage etc..., I wouldn't count on
it for showtime.

To my knowledge, there is no wireless USB hardware in production. Expect
some in late 2005, early 2006.
fwiw, the spec is WUSB 1.0.

If i wasn't clear: occasionally we have gigs where the venue puts up a
fuss about having the FOH in the front of house. what about something
like a Bluetooth Wireless USB Printer Adapter:
http://tinyurl.com/4xjno
says it's good up to 100m. Would it work?If it does, it would
certainly be better than having to mix from behind the stacks... |

My understanding is that Printer drivers are pre loaded into the
wireless device on the printer end. Only devices (printers) supported by
those pre loaded drivers will function on the wireless system. Same goes
for the WiFi 802.1 print servers.

This is my understanding. I don't know where someone would get the idea that
wireless printer drivers which are very special-purpose devices, are
anything like a full-fledged implementation of wireless USB. |

Ralphs option 3 is the way to do it and it is pleasingly easy to get
working.
2 laptops, 2 wireless cards and off you go.
Perhaps someone else can confirm this but I wouldn't think the remote laptop
needs to be anything special. After all, it isn't really doing a great deal
processing wise.

If it runs XP and has WiFi, you're set. On the other end, I've found the
Studio Manager software is not terribly processor intensive either. I
have an $850 HP laptop (1.8Ghz, 512M ram) that I got last year from Best
Buy. I extend my desktop with additional 1024x768 flat screen monitor. I
run Studio Manager (DM1K V1), Ashly Protea control software, iTunes for
Windows, Sportsounds (software that mimics an Instant Replay) and an
occasional game of Scrabble, all simultaneously without any issues. I do
have to close iTunes and Sportsounds to run Smaart though. No biggie.
