I have a Toshiba 42HP83 Plasma from BB. Yesterday after playing fine
for most of the day it just turned itself off. The picture goes black,
the relay clicks off, and then the power indicator blinks. I can turn
it back on and all comes up fine for about 30-60 seconds then turns off
again with the same symptoms. Any sugestions would be deeply
appreciated.

I do have the extended service plan and have already called BB and been
assigned a Tech but he can't get to it until Monday after 2 and I
really would like to have it up and running when the family comes over
for Thanksgiving dinner. Is it possible to just unplug it for a while
let everything reset and plug it back in. I used to fix my own but that
was more years ago than I care to mention.

By the way I wanted to thank you for you sanity and concise, well
thought out responses in this forum. It is nice to hear a voice of
reason occassionaly. Thanks.

I am flatterred that you appreciate my comments and would think that I have
the knowledge to solve your problem. However the best suggestion that I can
give is to try resetting it, but you will likely have to let the BB techs do
their job. I have no direct experience with the Toshiba PDPs and the best
rule of thumb on these is to leave it to someone who does, especially since
you have the ext warr. Be a good service consumer and document everything,
check all info that you are given, insist on knowing exactly what is being
done to your set, and assume nothing.

Let us know how it turns out and what the fix might be. Also, a signature,
a name, a location, or other information makes it more likely that your post
is useful to others and that it might get a more detailed response. The
annonimity of a moniker like "poster" seems like overkill to me, even in
these days of justified security. I help lots of people who contact me
online, but am less likely to go to any trouble or do any research for
someone who doesn't even have a name.

Didn't realize that the moniker was still set that way. Don't post much
just lurk and read. Thanks for the reply. I am in Hampton Virginia and
unlike a lot of folks haven't had anything but good experiences with
Best Buy. Little disappointed the plasma went down but these things
happen. Wouldn't you know it was almost to the day after the original
manufacturers warranty expires. Thank goodness I bought the extended
service plan. They contract out the actual repair to a local service
shop and I have used this one before but, not for anything this
caliber. The local repair shop (Color and Sound in Newport News) fixed
a couple of computer monitors for me a few years ago. We'll see.

The only real concern I have is getting the required parts from
Toshiba. I have heard some bad things but you really never know.

Thanks again.

Matt, keep us posted on what they are doing.

I have always said that extended warranties should be a consideration on
PDPs because of the likely high cost of repair, even though the reliability
seems pretty good on most.

Good luck.

You know it just occured to me that I might want to let this guy know
the tv is wall mounted before he gets out to the house. :)

Why, don't all the techs come with three strong helpers to remove and
reinstall all the customer's equiptment? At least that seems to be what
most of our customers expect, but will not get!!

What they get when they come to my house is an informed consumer who is
willing to step up to the plate and help in whatever way is needed, and
if it's late enough in the day a cold beer when the job is done.

Well it looks like the problem is a simple fix. The TV has two muffin
fans in it and both have a rotation sense lead. The right hand fan has
developed bad bearing and needs to be replaced. Of course the tech took
the TV to the shop just to run some tests and make sure the control
board isn't bad but when we flipped the fan a couple of times it
started and the TV stayed on. I don't think there is anything else
wrong with it. The tech promises six to ten working days until I get it
back. Will keep you informed. Thanks for all the support.

Hello, I just ran into this forum while looking for some information of this unsual behavior that just happened with my Toshiba 42HP83. It's having the exactly same behavior as mentioned above. The TV shuts off on its on after 30-40 seconds of picture and then power indicator keeps blinking. Last few months I've also been noticing loud fan noise from the back of the TV. So the fan problem could be a reason. Can any of you give me more info on this. Weird thing is that even I got this TV from Best Buy and luckily have the extended warranty, so time to bother them tomorrow morning.

Thanks, any kind of info on this is greatly appreciate
