Please help before I wrongly murder someone at Sony. I bought a Sony
Handycam to record a trip to Euro Disney with the kids. Didn't want
anything complicated - just wanted something small where I could
press a record button and later copy the footage to a PC. I've never
used a camcorder before and this seemed to fit the bill.

Did a few short test runs before I left and all seemed okay (recording
and playback). Back home tonight, I did a short recording and it said
the video head needed cleaning but I recorded for a few minutes anyway.

Now, when I playback there are thick, grey, horizontal lines running
through the image (of everything, not just the stuff I recorded
tonight). I didn't review the footage I took at Disney as, as I say,
I'd already done some tests to see if all worked. *PLEASE* tell me
that, when I clean the head (presumably with something I have to
purchase at additional cost), that the footage I took at Disney will be
okay. Even if it is, I still don't think that it particularly good
that the head needs cleaning already. However, I can live with that and
loosing the few minutes I recorded tonight, but if the footage I took
at Disney is ruined I will be rather cross to say the least.
Thanks,
Toby Austin

The wide bars are an indication of a head clog. The camera warned you of the
problem. Suicide seems more appropriate than murder. You were warned and chose
to ignore the warning. Probably the head cleaning will solve the problem. You
can do it by just running a tape at play-fast forward or RR for a few minutes
or buy a cleaning tape and run it per the instructions with the tape and in
your owner's manual. If you used other than Sony tape than you share even more
of the blame. Sony is considered by most as the best quality of DV tape and
always best for Sony cameras. Stick unfailingly with a single brand of tape
anyway and exercise clean tape handling procedures at all times to help avoid
future clogs. If the clog just occurred after, the Disney footage will be OK,
if not - ouch.

No, if you read the message, the camera only warned me of the problem
when I was recording the last few minutes - not the previous footage.

Besides, as I just paid c. £300, I expect it to work longer than c.
1hr before it needs to be cleaned (particularly as I need to pay extra
for the head cleaning tape).

I am using Sony tapes. If I have lost the Disney footage I will be very
annoyed - I bought the camera to do a specific job and it will have
failed. Anyway, I guess I'll buy the head cleaning tape and give it a
go; if it doesn't work it will all be going back to Sony.

Your situation is very unfortunate and not common by any means especially when
using Sony tape. If the bands do ultimately appear on the Disney footage the
tape is still salvageable by a video recovery service such as www.AVRS.net. Not
cheap, but an alternitive to loosing it alltogether.

I know you won't have been able to sleep worrying about the Disney
footage :-) The good news is that they are fine.

Thanks,

My Canon camcorder scared the crap outta me in much the same way.
About 2 hrs into using it, on a holiday in Hungary, I got those thick grey
lines along with a clean the heads msg. The guy that I bought it from
threw in a cleaning tape to seal the deal, so luckily I had it handy. Ever
since then I've used it about every 30hrs recording time.
