No audio when converting DIVX/MPEG4 files to MPEG2 ... Why ? |
|
|
Hi all, hopefully someone can suggest an answer for this.
I want to find out why there is no sound after the DIVX and MPEG4 files i
made have been converted to MPEG2 using VSO DivxToDVD
I captured some VHS video to DIVX and MPEG4 using the Plextor M402U and the
software that comes with it,Win DVD Creator 2 (which i'm not a fan of!)
The files are saved to My Videos, and they play back fine in the WinDVD
project,Windows Media Player etc,and I am happy with the picture and sound
quality.
BUT when i convert them to MPG2 with VSO DivxtoDVD,and open them in DVD
Shrink so i can make a disc image,I get no audio when i play them back in
the DVD Shrink project window.
(I like to record to DIVX then convert to MPG2 because i think it comes out
nicer than just starting off in MPEG2 from scratch)
I don't have this problem with files i have downloaded,so why cant i do it
with files i recorded myself ?
I did notice looking at the file properties, that the audio differs. On the
ones i made, the audio bitrate is 224kbps,and on the ones i downloaded it is
MPEG Layer-3.If i need to change a setting in WinDVD,I cant see how to do
it.
I need answers before i get more frustrated
thanks

Just found out that an upgrade seems to be required for WinDVD2 to allow MP3
sound recording with the plaxtor device. Its costs $15 and i think that
sucks. |

If you can play the captured Divx okay then you should be able to
generate a .wav file for the audio by dropping the video file on
GoldWave 4.26. You can download it here:
http://www.goldwave.com/release426.php
note: it doesn't mention XP but I'm using it on XP without problems.
You just drag and drop the video file and after it "deflashes to disk"
do File=>SaveAs 16 bit signed stereo .wav file.
Then just process your Divx to mpeg2 using TMPGEnc Plus.
Yeah it costs $37 but it works with tons of freeware video apps.
After you select the video file in the wizard, load the .wav file you
made as the audio file. Now when you convert to DVD you should
have good audio. See www.videohelp.com for guides using TMPGEnc.
If you want to stick chapter points in your DVD there are guides at
the same site for DVDAuthorGUI. Another freeware.
btw-make sure you look at the guide for tuning TMPGEnc Plus.
You have to raise certain priorities in the Environment VFAPI
settings or some .avi files will kick out as "unsupported" when
they really aren't. You just need to adjust TMPGEnc according
to the guide before using.
Have fun. :) |

No to add too much salt to your wounds, I recently encouraged a friend to
buy a Plextor-Convertx (happily the friendship survived) and help in its
installation and subsequent phone calls to Plextor.
1) The device does Divx capture on the fly, however:
a) its bitrates are somewhat different than I'm accustomed to with the
Divx codec.
b) ONLY the 4 mbps copies looked at all decent on a digital display, and
not as good (IMNSVFHO) as the much lower bitrate conversions I make myself
from 12 mbps MPEG2 captures using a Hauppauge card.
2) NONE of the third-party software supplied recognizes AVI-DIVX except the
intervideo basic capture program which will do ONLY that, capture it.
3) The default break-point in the capture program for file size is 4gB - How
f'n stupid can one get? Why not 1 or 2 gB so that the files can be written
to DVD media without further ado? And can the tech reps at Plextor figure
out how? No. They have to email intervideo to get an answer (which is still
forthcoming 5 days later).
4) I've been a happy Hauppauge user for years and years, but I do a lot of
conversion to xvid from series captures. The idea of divx on-the-fly (I
wonder why, I have divx on the fly? Sloppy ....) any way, that's another
song;-0) appealed greatly - how very nice of me to get friend to buy and
test, eh?
If I can dissuade any who might be considering this product, please wait!
Settle for the more mature products that do the job right.
Oh yes, the audio problem. I did notice with raised eyebrow that it uses
MPEG1-1. I'd never actually seen that before, but it is so fundamental that
it should not be a problem. My friend plays the divx captures (after
splitting with Vdub) on a Philips divx certified player. It's possible that
VSO or Shrink doesn't handle that audio stream, but I'd doubt it?
